Used the wrong running system disk when we reformatted our computer

Hello, all. I wonder if you might be able to provide a bit of help for one of those "Oh, crap!" moments I'm sure we've all had before. ;)

Here is our problem. My dad decided he wanted to reformat his HP Pavilion dv1000 lap top (circia 2007 I think) because it was running extremely slow and probably had all sorts of spyware on it, as well as a lot of unnecessary programs, so it just seemed easier to start fresh. The original running system for the lap top was Windows XP Home Edition.

Unfortunately, we ended up accidentally grabbing the e-Machine System Recovery disks that are for his desktop instead of the Windows XP recovery disks for his lap top. Needless to say, the computer didn't much like it, and now we can't get it to boot up, period. We get the e-Machine/Powered by PC Angel System Recovery opening screen, but then we get a blue screen saying "A problem has been detected, and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." Then, at the bottom of the screen, "Technical Information: Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF899E64, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

We cannot open the computer in Safe mode, and attempting to start again using the proper Windows XP edition system reformat disks doesn't do any good. Now we're kind of stuck on what to do next, or if the only option left is to take it in to a computer place.

    Help would be appreciated. :)

With the proper recovery disk in the tray try hitting F12 repeatedly when powering up and see if you get a boot order screen where you can select to boot from CD.

If no such screen try F10 when powering up and see if you get an HP screen to go into BIOS and set the boot order to CD first.

Popping the correct running system disk in will start a "boot from disk", but after it spends a minute or so with a blue screen that says "Windows Setup", we get another error message saying that no hard disks are installed on the computer and it cannot continue. My brother managed to finagle a hard drive test yesterday, and everything came back okay for the hard drive - it looks like the problem is the running system confusion. Or something.

I suppose I still could be using an improper disk, which is a Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP Home Edition that my brother purchased for his laptop not long after we got the one that is currently having issues. The disk also has a Service Pack 2, and the is version 2002.

I'll think about this a bit more.

At first, i thought that the no hard drive error might be because it had a SATA HD and needed those drivers loaded to install XP, but looking at the product specifications that laptop should have an IDE HD so no drivers are needed.

The HD is obviously connected properly because it boots to the non-functioning Windows without the CD.

Let's see if anyone sees something I am missing.

I think I would be inclined to pop the eMachine disc back in and do a reformat. Wipe the hard drive and then stop the installation. Then see if you can boot to the right cd.
