I have a computer I built and installed Win.Xp and it was SP1 , I have downloaded SP2 and running it. I just built another computer and the OS that I bought is Win. XP SP2. I installed it on 2nd computer . My Question is can I use the Win. XP SP2 CD in my first computer if I ever have to. This way I would'nt have uninstall SP2 . Thanks Chuck :)

I may have misunderstood but my impression is that you would have to download sp2 alone to put on your first PC as installing your XP SP2 on a second PC would violate the EULA -again: I hope I read your post correctly.

Ok. If I ever need to do a repair on my OS I now have to uninstall SP2 before I can use the Win.Xp OS ,SP1 CD. What I was asking if the Win.Xp OS,SP2 CD could be used on a Computer that SP2 was downloaded on to ? I hope you can understand what I was asking Chuck Thanks

For the sake of clarity this is what I understand: You have an existing copy of Windows XP which includes SP1 that is installed on one of your PCs. You also have a second PC for which you bought a new OS installation WinXP SP2. You've installed this version of XP(SP2) on your second PC and you want to know if you can use the same XP SP2 disc to instal on your first PC (which was previously installed with XP SP1). -If I udersand you correctly then I have to say 'NO' you cannot install your first PC with your XP SP2 -because it is *technically* supposed to be for 1 PC only. -If that is the case then you would want to use windows update to update your first PC to SP2 (you could even create a slipstream CD that includes sp2). As for your second XP disc (the one that includes SP2) it is *supposed* to be installed on just one PC.
Do you get that I'm talking legality as oppsed to functionality?
I hope I've understood you correctly -but if not I'm sure someone like Adrynalyne will step in to clarify the legality of the situation.
    -Yours,
    522.

Both OS are bought and paid for,So I'm not doing anything Illegal. I was not talking about installing it ,I was talking about repairing it if I had to. It was just a thought, I have had to do a repair and to do this you have to uninstall sp2 before the cd will work(sp1 cd)

    please help Adrynalyne.

OK -I understand your reply...but I still think the EULA prevents you from doing what you want -at this point you could really use advice from Adrynalyne to clarify.
I'll update the title and *hopefully* he will respond -you could also try PM-ing him.

    In this Case,

Honestly you could use My mother's XP Sp2 cd to fix any one of your machines for the pure and simple fact that you have your own cd-key that you have purchased.

With any software out there, the company can't really say "You can't use THIS DISC, because it's not the one you bought." As long as you have your own license information it's fine. Kinda like saying You can't drive any car other than the one that you bought. You still have a driver's license so why couldn't you drive any car that the owner gives you permission to.

Analogy XP Sp2 CD = Car ( I have to keep these things straight in my own.)

If you have Windows XP with servive pack 1 now, why not just ask microsoft for the FREE Service pack CD they are sending out? I have one, and it works well. You can order it at no charge to you at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Can't compare it that way, XP cd's come with a cd-key for that cd. Once it is installed on a computer, it cannot be used on a second computer, even for a repair. Think of it as the cars registration, can't be used on different cars just because you own them both.

As mentioned earlier, order the free SP2 cd.

Also, I just repaired my installation, with a non-service pack cd without uninstalling SP2 and had no problems, just had to install the SP2 again.

Boy ,I started something, I don't really think that the cd matches the key code but I might be wrong. Now it's really got me wondering. next PC I build I'll try one of my other cd's and then put in the new key code.I do keep all my OS cd's marked so I don't mix them up just for that reson. That would be a mess. Anyway thanks for everyones input, If I do try it I'll let you all know. Thanks Chuck
