I have a few icons on my desktop that will not open anything but also cannot be deleted. I got them them by going to Start, Programs, and then right clicking on a program and clicking on Create Shortcut. After I moved them to the desktop they became useless. Does anybody have an idea on how to get rid of them?

    Thanks!!

The basic answer would be right click and then delete. If that does not work perhaps they are associated w/ an open program and cannot be deleted(part of the running program shut it down then try again).

    Hopethathelpedya :p

I downloaded both and moveonb was not help and Unlocker does not show up in the column when I right click. When I go to Start, Programs, Unlocker, I get a choice of README, Uninstall, & web site. Is that all there is or do I need to uninstall and re-download?

    Safe Mode didn't help.

Weird that MoveOnBoot didnt move it, when you installed Unlocker did you on the install process also tick "send to shortcut menu" as that will add the right click send to option, this program is mainly used via Explorer which will give you the right click option for Unlocker.

remind me Ron, which OS do you have and what if any messages are shown when you try to delete those shortcuts,

If XP are you logged in as admin, just a thought.

    1. Download Pocket KillBox

    2. Open the file once done downloading

    3. Look for a folder-like icon , click on it

    4. Search for the icon on your desktop then double click that

    5. Select "Standard Kill File" from the options

    6. Then click on the red "X" icon

    7. A popup will come up confirming the deletion click on "yes"

Glad you have rid of them Ron, Must thank SPD for the new program Unlocker, must have missed that app when looking through the assorted apps at MGs, but I like it cheers :)

Found it one day surfing thru the downloads. Works nicely, has become one of my must have apps for XP.

Maybe I need to add it to my list of applications also, but I still have a habit of using either repair console or other offline tools that are definitely not cheap. :)

Also, another way, is to use the registry to remove hard to delete programs. There is a key that you can set to remove a particular program on next reboot. But, if a gui works, then by all means, use the easier way! ;)
