User account access help please!

Hi everyone,

My daughter has changed her password to allow access to her user account on my PC. She is refusing to tell me it and I have concerns that she will download a virus/malware etc. She has done this before! Is there a way for me to access her account without the password?:confused

 

i'd say no. there are key logging programs that you could try. but, if you don't have the password, then you can't login. you haven't said what os you have (ie - xp, vista).

now, is her acct an "admin acct"? this is for xp --> control panel --> user accounts (what does her acct say?). are you an admin acct? if so, you could always delete her acct (save her stuff - it'll ask), create a new "limited acct". see screenshot below. vista should be similar, but will more than likely be different.

do you have broadband (ie - dsl/cable)? there are things you can do (well, at least i can). is the compter in question wired to the modem or router (how does it connect to the internet), or is it wireless? in my household i can turn off the wireless signal if i want, and the wired will work (visa/versa). in other words, they can use the comp, but not get on the internet. there are ways of persuading them to do things!! is she more computer saavy than you? if you provide us with more details, we might be able to help you out. - sos

edit - either way, if you delete her acct, and create a new limited acct, or even better, just turn on the guest acct, you'll have to install programs (if you want), for them to use (ie - aim, msn messenger, etc, etc). the thing with guest acct, is that you can turn it off when you want (they can't login - unless they know someone elses password), and turn it back on when you want. i have used this approach when i want them to do something, and they won't. after a few days, to a week, or so, they'll somewhat be begging to be let back on the comp. at least it somewhat worked for me!!
