In a recent column, I asked users of Windows-based PCs if they were tempted at all to switch to a Macintosh , as I am considering doing for my next home computer.

As is often the case when the subject is Mac versus PC, I got a big response -- both from Windows and Mac users.

I heard from Windows users who were intrigued by the power of the new Mac Pros, those who were adamant about staying with Windows and those who had made the switch already. I heard from Mac users who encouraged me to make the leap and others who suggested I do everyone a favor and stick to Windows. (After my column was posted on a Mac devotees' Web site, it drew commentary deriding me as clueless).

    It's All About the Benjamins

The vast majority of Windows users who responded, however, weren't interested in making the switch. The reason most often cited: the lower cost of Windows PCs.

From Steve Fong: "I, too, like your daughter, am in the design field where Macs are the norm. In fact, when I pull out my HP laptop, I can feel the derisive looks and snickers from around the conference table. However, being a freelance designer, I use a PC because I can get more power and storage without spending $$$$. It just makes sense for me. The new Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Macs are tempting, but I won't switch just to get a cool, shiny silver case. But they are purty!"............

As long as Apple's market share is small, the threat level from haxors will remain low. very low. I can't recall the last Mac virus or any malware...

I haven't seen any of those on TV, but they are funny. I'd be suprised if they did put them on, given they Mac/PC debate I found myself empathising with the PC more.

I use a PC the same reason most people do, money. Since I build them myself, they are as gaudy or plain as I choose. I would truely love it if Linux caught up with M$ in general application, no one denies it is superior in server/web stuff, but I'm not holding my breath.

There was a time the Amiga group would argue this. Now they are gone, so I have to root for the other underdogs, Linux and Macs. I've heard that both are more stable than the Messyboxes.

I use windows, but I would like something better. So far I've resisted "upgrading" to XP, I might even make it to Vista (is this a good thing?).

Xp is brilliant,if you consider the array of hardware it has to get working together,I think its a huge achievment

Windows gets blamed alot becuse its the one that tells you about a problem even if its the hardware thats at fault,if you practice safe surfing, use quality parts, pay attention to cooling keep windows up to date problems should at a minimal,I havnt had an unexplained crash for years now on either of the last two systems I built

I'd challenge an MAC anyday at any test, benchmark, stability or cost effectiveness running xp pro

When adrynalyn comes back to the forum keep this post a secret though:D

EDIT and when your custom machine is finished and purring away you can say,I DID IT MY WAY!

Your problem is you don't have kids. When you have kids, you don't truely control anything, least of all your computer. I used to visit a chat room that was a simple PC with Linux running in some university somewhere. Every year or so we'd have to contact the dude that set it up so he could bring the clock back in sinc, more drift than 12 hrs is distracting, but the setup never died. Nowdays you could probably sinc it with a clock site, one without extra features like adware.

I wouldnt call it a problem:) I couldnt live like that asking a guys to come round to fix the clock I'd stay up all night learning how to do it if its as complex as you are saying

But anyway each to his own,go with the tool that fits the job

BTW Bill I was way too harsh when speaking of the Masons its kinds been on my conscience, again I'm sorry

Ricky, you asked questions, which is more than a lot of folks will do. No problem, no worries, and no need for apologies. Forums and chat rooms magnify trivia and turn simple conversations into fights to the death. I remember argueing that Commodores were the equal of PCs. Sound funnys, until you remember that the PC's of the time were 4Mhz 8086's. Some of the discussions got quite nasty on that one.

I posted this another thread, but check out this Flame Warriors Caracature site sometime, it is funny.
