User Name/Password

Hey everyone got a question for ya. I got this computer (ok, not the one I'm typing on right now but another one) out of the garbage. It's this thing that I do. I get old computers that people throw out and get'em working and then donate them to people who need them. This particular computer has a user name and password set so I can't log on and see if the system is working and intact. My question is: Is there anyway to get around that so I can reset it or log in as a user other then the administrator. Any suggestions would be great.

Check google for more information. Because you are not the original owner, there really isn't much we can do for you here. If its XP, I can offer you this, and this alone. Check Safe Mode, and see if the admin account can be logged into.

The right thing to do is reinstall Windows with a legit CD. It doesnt do anyone justice to give away a computer that doesn't have the CD to reinstall the OS with. Once the OS breaks, it becomes a paperweight.

 

Thanks for the tip I'll give it a shot. Now here's another question. How can I reinstall with a CD when I it goes to the user name, how can I get to the C: promt? I've tried F8, the computer is running Windows NT so it doesn't have the options of newer systems. I'd hate to toss the computer if it can be saved. Thanks again.

You boot to the CD, or the NT bootdisks. There is no reason not to do a clean install.
The password is only affecting the OS on the hard drive.
