I use a 13" Macbook pro to draw with a tablet. As you can imagine it doesn't give me much space to work with for big images. As far as my understanding goes hooking up your computer to tv just blows up the image and doesn't increase space like a regular monitor.

Basically my question is do I need a bigger monitor to increase drawing space (pixel length/height) or is there a way to do it on my tv?

Sure it does. Understand a TV is just a monitor with a built in tuner. As long as your notebook's graphic solution can support the resolution of the larger display (regardless if TV or monitor) and you have the correct interface (HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, or DSub/VGA) you are good to go.
