I am using a work VPN at the moment which works without any issues.
However my general internet access is very slow as it has to go through the vpn and into work etc.

How can i use my work VPN and use my own wireless internet for browsing the internet?

Ok i managed to work this one out myself.

You need to disable the "use default gateway" option under network properties of the vpn.

FYI Only: That's known as "split tunneling" and some client/server VPNs won't allow it because of trust issues.

It depends upon the VPN client and how the system administrator has it configured. My thought would be, assuming that ICMP traffic isn't being dropped by your employer's network, perform a trace route (tracert) to an internet destination and determine what specific path the traffic is taking. You should be able to see if the traffic is hopping through the VPN and over your employer's network. If there are any questions, do another trace route while you're not connected to the VPN for a comparison.
