    Hello
Can I use the person's pc I amvisiting for 3 weeks with my laptop and router?
We both have Comcast cable. An ethernet router won't work because we each have different ip addresses. So maybe I could feed her ethernet to my router insted of her pc then both could use the router.
If this is ok do I need any more cables thanI already have using my desktop and router to communicate with my laptop.
Maybe there is an easier way?
    Thank you

Your IP address doesnt really matter. If you connect a router to a cable modem, and then connect your computers to the router, itll work.

    unless im missing something here

    Setup:
Connect modem to router's WAN/Internet port with an ethernet cable - then connect your computers to the router's switch ports with an ethernet cable or wireless. its usually that simple.

I had a second thought. If I run an ethernet cable out of her modem to my router and we each plug into a port in the router, if she has a keylogger or malware in her machine, will it affect my security?
My naiete leads me to ask such a question as we now seem to share the same side of a router.
    Thank you

    Hi Peter

No, as all your sharing is the internet connection, it would be her PC thats infected and so long as you dont start network sharing then your PCs security will hopefully catch any malware her PC may have before it infects you, also if you feel her PC has malware then run our malware guide on her PC and help her clean it up!

    Hello all
I am now online in MA. since arriving from MD.
I am tying up the information from my first post where I asked if I could use my friend's Comcast connection to run my laptop especially through my router.
At first it did not work. I ran my ethernet cable from her modem to my router, than a cable from the 1st lan port to my pc.
I called Comcast and was told to power cycle the modem oor at least power it off for ten seconds.
After about 4 or 5 tries I am online as you can see.
I called up my router and all seems ok.
I would like to thank all those who took the time to help me with this issue and to tell any one who will be doing this, to be patient when working with the modem.
    Thank you
