I am new to Nero and am under the impression that Nero can be used to back up the hard drive in case of a crash. Is this correct? If yes, what steps does one need to go through to make this happen?

I tried Nero Backup and I keep getting compression error messages if I try to back up the C Drive. Can anyone help? Detailed instructions would helpful. I would appreciate it.

    System is: Windows XP Sp2
    AMD 64 FX-55
    2.60 GHz 512 MB Ram
    HD = Western Digital/CaviarSE/200GB/7200/8MB/ATA-100/EIDE
    ASUS A8V Mobo
    VIA K8t800Pro Chipset
    DVD = Pioneer 16x DVD+RW/-RW Dual Layer DVR-108B

While your at the Nero website, update to the latest version (6) if you aren't using it as prior versions don't support NTFS partitions.

I am using Nero Enterprise Edition 6.6.06.

When using Backitup I get the following messages during the operation

"Error occurred while reading file during compression" and
    "Unable to compress [filename]".

I am trying to backup my hard drive onto one or more DVDs. The total size of the backup is 12.98GB.

Are ther some settings I am missing? I can't figure this out?

I doubt if you are doing anything wrong as it's wizard driven and very simple.

Although I've used Nero since it's inception, I don't use Backitup as it's only a "new" program and still in it's infancy.

    Anyway, it should still work.

Does it supply the filename and is it always failing on the same file or a different one every time?

If it's the same one, all I can suggest is to exclude that file and try again.

Were these file/s in the TEMP dir? if so dont worry about them being backed up.... I get the same on a few temp files iirc they are locked ZoneAlarm temp files.

Does the backup procedure finish even with these errors or does it stop?

I ahve completed the backup. It took 4:33:53 and is contained on 3 DVDs. The messages during the backup and compression process were:

"error occurred while reading during file compression" and
"unable to compress" for the following files:
    c:\windows\System32|config\default\sam.log
    \default.log

    Windows\software Distribution\Event Cache\{#####.bin) (a lot of these files)

c:\windows\Debug\Passws.log is open in shared mode

    C:\Recycler\Nprotect\#####.bin
    .hst
    .edb
    .dll
    .spy
    .dat
    .dmp
    .log
The above files were numbered sequentially.

    Verification for:
    c:\windows\system32\wben\depository\fs\objects.map
    mapping.map
    mapping.ver
    index.map
    c:\windows\bebug\usermode\usernr.log
    c:\documentsand Settings\Boproczko\localsettings\application data\microsoft\windows\userclass.dat

    c:\documents and settings\networkServices.nt Authority.oo4\ntuser.dat
    ntuser.log

    c:\documentsandsettings\allusers\applicatondata\microsoft\DrWatson\user.dmp

I don't know if I actually have a valid backup or not.

I hope this information means something to you guys because I have no clue.

How many accounts do you have and is the machine networked?

Also make sure you don't have Norton Recycle Bin protection enabled when you do the backup or exclude it.

From what I can see, most of the problem files are diagnostic or debug logs and aren't vital to the system, so I would try to exclude them.

Failing that I can't offer much more as I don't use BackItUp.

There is only one account on this machine. I have a home wireless network share with another desktop. Norton is not running on the hard drive that I want to backup.

Thanks for all of your help.

    Your error log states "C:\Recycler\Nprotect..."

That is Norton Recycle Bin protection and is part of Norton Utilities or SystemWorks.

It's either installed or has been previously.

It really seems like your files need some "tidying up" before you think about backing up.

I used to have norton on this machine but I don't anymore. Is this a remnant of Norton? Don't tell me, let me guess --- There is no easy way to get rid of it?
