Using PartitionMagic 8.0

    Okay, so I have PartitionMagic 8.0, and I want to take my current HD (a 30 GB, with no partitions) and change it so that I have a 15 GB OS partition and the remainder will be like a "Stuff" drive. Anyone know how I would do this? Also, is 15 GB enough for the OS (Windows XP Home), or should I use less or more space?

    Note: After I correctly set the partitions, I am transferring the HD's contents onto an 80 GB HD that will become my sole physical drive instead of the 30 GB.

    To split a partition

    1 Select a partition.
    2 Click Partition > Split.
    3 Click the Data tab.
    4 From the Original Partition group box, select the files and folders you want to move to the new partition, then click the single right arrow.

    Click the left arrow to remove selected files and folders from the new partition. To move all files and folders to the new partition, click the double right arrow. You can also click the left arrow to move selected files and folders back to the original partition. You must, however, have at least one file or folder remaining in the original partition.

    5 (Optional) Type a name for the new partition in the Label text box.
    6 Select a partition type from the Pri/Log drop-down list.
    7 Click the Size tab.
    8 Size the new partition by moving the bar on the far right in the disk map, or by typing the number of MB in the Size text box.

    The original partition will be adjusted to use the remaining space.

    9 Click OK.

    Tips

    · PowerQuest does not recommend splitting the partition that includes your operating system.

    · If Split is dimmed (unavailable) on the Partition menu, it is most likely because you are trying to split a primary partition when you have already reached the maximum four primary partitions (such as three primary partitions and one extended partition) allowed on a hard disk. You can, however, use Split on a logical partition within an extended partition.

    · You can split partitions if they are 100 MB or larger.

    · A FAT partition must have at least 5% unused space, or the Split operation will be dimmed (unavailable) on the Partition pull-down menu. A FAT32 partition requires 10% unused space to split.

    · You cannot use the Split operation to convert the original partition from primary to logical or vice versa.

    The Split button is grayed out, there is only one partition on the drive (or no partitions set). I will be using NTFS on all partitions, using Windows XP Home (already installed on the drive) as my OS. How large should the partition for the OS and OS-related files be and which folders should I move to said partition?

    If your split is grayed then your only choice will be to back up your stuff(data) and free that space(delete your data) so you can create a partition from the free space in the drive.15 gb would be enough.Then you can clone the 15gb with your os and programs to the new disk.

    How much stuff would I have to delete to be able to split the partition? =/ This is getting complicated... :eek:

    Split is not the same as creating a partition from free space in an existing partition.You just need 15 gb for the os and programs.I beleive you know how to create a new partition by taking free space from an existing partition using PM.

    At this rate, it almost seems like it would be easier to just clone the drive onto the 80 GB NOW, and then repartition THAT drive. If something goes wrong, I still have all the files on the 30 GB. What do you think?

    ok :)

    Okay, I finished moving my data from one drive to the other. Now, I will repartition this drive so that I have an "OS" partition and a "files/stuff" partition, and move my non-OS stuff onto the "stuff" partition. Once that's done, I'll resize the OS partition down to 15 GB.

    The next problem is, all of my shortcuts and such that pointed to the C: drive before (or right now, before moving files around)... is there an easy way to redirect them all to their new paths?

    Also, should I move Program Files over to the "stuff" partition, or should they stay with the OS? (someone once told me that it should stay with the OS, but I think that at least some separation of "programs" versus "games" should be made)

    EDIT: Oh yeah, the new HD seems a little noisier than the old one (I had a Hitachi 30GB before, and now I have a Toshiba 80GB, both run at 4200 RPMs), should I worry about this or is it nothing to be concerned about?

    Well, PartitionMagic won't run on this drive, giving me the error
    Code:
    Init failed: Error 117.

    Partition's drive letter cannot be identified.
    When I run PartitionInfo, it tells me that there are no partition errors, but that there is one disk geometry error:
    Code:
    ===========================================================================================================
    Disk Geometry Information for Disk 1:    9729 Cylinders,  255 Heads,  63 Sectors/Track
    System PartSect # Boot BCyl Head Sect FS ECyl Head Sect StartSect NumSects
    ===========================================================================================================

    Info: End C,H,S values were large drive placeholders.
      Actual values are:
            0  0  80      0    1    1  07   9728  253   63        63 156296259
    Error #108: Partition didn't end on cylinder boundary.
      ucEndHead expected to be 254, not 253.
    Also, when I run PartitionMagic from its CD (in a DOS-booted environment), it tells me that the partition is bad and that there is a "BADMBR" error (which I suppose means that the Master Boot Record has bad data in it). There is a section in PartitionInfo that gives me info on the Boot Record, here is what it shows:
    Code:
    ===========================================================================================================
    Boot Record for drive C: (Drive: 1, Starting sector: 63, Type: NTFS)

    22. Checksum:               0  (0x0)
    23. Boot Signature:         0xAA55
    And lastly, here is the drive info:
    Code:
    ===========================================================================================================
    Partition Information for Disk 1: 76,316.6 Megabytes
    Volume PartType Status Size MB PartSect # StartSect TotalSects

    Has this become a hardware problem and should I post in the Hardware forum for this?

    Okay, I fixed all previously mentioned problems, and now I just have the problem that I've quoted (files, such as playlists, referencing drive C: when the files are now on drive D:). Any suggestions?
