UT2004 - Onslaught

    I am wondering if anyone else is getting any lag in the onslaught gametype in UT2004. Because I am only getting about a 20-25 fps average. And sometimes it even dips down under 10. Obviously this is unplayable. I had no problems playing the onslaught gametype in the Demo. Now that I have bought the full version, it is unplayable. It's strange, I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing the same thing...

    Lot of complaints on servers too. Word is on the forums I read that its simply a CPU hog.

    Yeah, I imagine it is simply a resource hog because of the size of the maps, and all the things going on but I don't understand the difference in the performance between the demo and the full version. In any case, I hope it is something they can fix in a patch because I really like onslaught. :)

    You're right, it is a resource hog. There are a few differences between the demo and the final release though... the sizes of the textures, etc. I'd go into the settings and crank down some details and/or crank down your resolution a bit. Things like Particle Generators and fog are pretty, but you don't really need them to play the game. About the only time they don't slow me down is if I'm playing against bots :\

    I hear that disabling the texture pre-caching helps too.

    I personally have not noticed anything with it where do I check my fps?

    either go to console by pressing the tilde ( ~ ) key or press tab for the quick console and type in: Stat Fps

    Changing the world and charachter detail settings should help your fps, and disabling 3D Sound hardware would give a small performance boost too. And then of course, making sure you're running a minimum of background services and programs always helps :D

    Small rant.

    I've not picked this game up yet, but what is up with games like this having unoptimized code? There should be no reason why an Athlon XP 3200+ and a 9800 Pro should choke on this game...

    It seems like all of the Unreal series has gone through this in the beginning. I ask, why?? Why do we have to wait for performance patches to come out? Why can't they have it at least work right on high end hardware out of the box?

    Well, I'm actually getting my 9800 Pro any minute. (come on UPS truck!!!) :) Right now, I'm running with a GF4 TI4400 128. Even if I turn the graphics down to 640x480 and details all the way down, I get a noticeable bit of lag. I'll post back after I get my new vid card up to let you guys know if it was the Geforce card/drivers that is causing the lag.

    I'm running the game on a 2600+ and a 9700 Pro... so far no problems. But then again my detail settings aren't cranked that high... seeing the guy that's shooting at me is a lot more important to me than seeing the plantlife :D

    my specs are in my sig, i run EVERYTHING high as it will go and at 1600x1200 its sooooo beautiful.....no lag at all...

    Ugh this sucks. I am now getting about 40 fps @ 1024x768 with all the details up. It's a strange type of lag. It isn't constant. It seems to happen every 2 or 3 seconds. I will get a huge lag spike or two in a row. I don't understand. I've got the newest Catalyst drivers (4.3) and it is still running like crap. And it only happens on onslaught. In deathmatch games it works great; I get about an average of 100 fps. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should try and do?

    Checked the server, its maxing out the cpu almost constantly. I got it down some cutting it to 20 players and killing some services, but still....

    if you have voice enabled.. disable it. see if it helps.

    I'll get it somtimes, ill press forward, not go anywhere, then suddenly i find myself on the other side of the map. Weeeiiird

    Well, I've found the solution. (for me at least :)) Per some posts on the UT2004 boards if you turn off Pre-loading of player skins, it helps immensely. Now, looking back at the posts on this thread, I imagine that's what Kodo meant by disabling texture pre-caching. So, credit to him as well. :D If you are having ridiculously low framerates, try disabling pre-loading of player skins and speech recognition. It's in the 'Settings' menu under the 'Game' tab.

    My system is almost identicle to yours Wyatt...

    I had the same problems with the same solutions but I get the occasional jump still with the biggest onslought maps so I've read everything I can find and I reckon if you want absolutely no jumping then you need 1GB of system ram... end of

    I dont have a problem with the graphics being rendered, works fine with botmatch and some net games, but in some net games like on majorgeeks there is massive lag... like you step forward, then 5 seconds later you find yourself on the other side of the map. A complete nightmare if youre trying to fight someone!
