    My friend you need help....

Quake rules the world, maybe Q4 is the worst of the bunch but what a bunch, it still beats UT2003-2004 though Q4 is also a single player game unlike the new UT's. To be honest the Q4 multiplayer side isn't up to spec as well but nothing could ever top Q3 so maybe we have all been spoilt.

The first UT back in 1999 was competeing with Quake 3, and it fell short by a couple of miles like everything else. Still I enjoyed the game as it wasn't until 2001 that I got a computer capable of playing Q3 smoothly and a broadband internet connection, and the system requirements for UT were more forgiving.
UT 2003 was a great looking game and improved on the original in terms of gameplay but still wasn't anything special. I haven't played UT2004 yet but I hear it's the same as UT2003 with more balanced weapons and less bugs.
UT 2007 will look amazing but what game dosen't look amazing these days. Also it is being developed with the playstation 3 in mind so it won't be anything special either, but you will be garunteed LOTS of people playing it online so the leagues and tournaments will be packed out, something again where Q4 fails though lots of Painkiller and UT2004 players have moved to Q4 because of lack of interest in these older games. Still it does look good theres no denying that.

    Hi jedandjess ,

Nice to speak to fellow gamer with the same kind of passion for his game:) ,
i know what your saying, and yes the previous versions of ut lacked that combination of makes a good all rounder on the shoot em ups.

And again each to his own i discovered ut cause someone introduced me to it it could have been quake,
i also enjoyed r.t.c.w doom3,max Payne,avp,avp2,avp2+ i think all these games have elements of the same thing but if i get the time I'll give quake3 ago
i suppose why i have stayed with ut2004 so long is the mods and allowing users access to so editing software for the game to be able to add your own personal feel to the game i post the a link to the demo below for you to download and give us your ratings
could you post a link for quake3 demo love to give it ago

Ha cool I'm downloading that demo right now :) thanks for the link. I think the best thing for you to do is maybe get the Quake 4 demo though, since last November the Quake 3 servers the world over have been like a desert plain, it sometimes takes half an hour to find a server with more than 3 people in it and when you do the players are of such a high level a newbie to the game wouldn't enjoy it at all. It's a shame but the game is 7 years old after all. To be honest though, I understand where you are coming from. If you try a game online and like it, only after a long time say 6 months do you start to appreciate the game for real. At the start you are learning and deciding wether or not the game is for you. After that you start to take part in the community and with all great online fps games, the better you become at your game the more fun you have, as you can develop tactics and strategies as well as just improving your aim. I found that playing mods and different styles of game (ie. team deathmatch and CTF) opened new doors and breathed life back into Q3 for me as the 1v1 scene was dying off. I will try UT2004 though, and let you know what I think.

As a side not and sorry for the double post :) the list of other games you like are all good games. It's strange to think that after all the hype about Doom 3 it is not a bustling online community anywhere near the scale of CSS or UT2k4 despite it being made by iD. It just goes to show that even the best people can not get the mix right. More people play Painkiller (which Fatal1ty adapted early on when he quit Q3) than Doom 3!?! No Way! :)
Doom 3 is a great single player game, in multiplayer it doesn't have the right mix for some reason. The other games you mentioned are all great SP games as well and I enjoyed them all. What I can say is that because Q4 isn't up to scratch right now, don't dismiss it as the size of the (ever growing) community, along with the presence of the hardcore elite from the Q3 scene, means that the support and MOD scene will be strong and after a few 3rd party patches etc. I think Q4 will surpass Q3 in terms of quality gameplay. It's just not quite there right now.

Quake 4 was a great SP game, I've yet to try the MP. UT2004 has some great team play elements to it... Onslaught and Bombing Run being top of the list (IMO), but deathmatch in UT is the same as Quake is the same as HL, etc. Run around like a lunatic and twitch kill.

Battlefield 2 is pretty cool, as well as America's Army. The latter particularly cause the price is right ;) and it definitely has the teamplay and strategic elements that go beyond the wash, rinse, repeat cycle of running around looking for weapons and power ups, killing anything you can before they get you first.

The first Unreal and Quake II were the reasons why I got a computer for gaming, before that it was all about consoles for me. The one I miss most though, is Quake 2 CTF... that grappling hook was badass :)
