wasn't exactly sure where to ask this but...
i recently had to format (prior to format i had no problems what so ever) and i never used sp2 (xp pro) but this time i installed sp2 so i'm sure this is my problem. the problem i'm having is for torrents my app (utorrent) says port is not open. i have all my settings correct, open in router and firewall settings is there something i'm missing.? i wouldn't even care but i read and artical you can make utorrent your own personal tracker and i realized this is a great way to send bigger video files to family in another country. also, my download speed is fine but upload is horrid if it connects at all. thanks for any input. before sp2 i could send my video files at whatever speed i set it to. also, all my media is on external hard drives.

Hmmmm... it sounds like you've covered the bases pretty well. All I can really suggest is to visit www.portforward.com and double check all the settings shown for your router model. A visit to the uTorrent site's help page may not be a bad idea either... I had similar trouble a while back, and I went to portforward, and followed the guide (I thought I did it the first 3 times but I guess I missed something), and after doing exactly what they said, all was well....

If you are sure you have set your static IP address and your router properly, try this: test the port through speed guide in your uTorrent options menu. If it says it is not open, press F5. That will re-test the port. When I've had to do that , it always tells me the port IS open.

hd2k, thanks, did just as you said and read through all the faq at utorrent and found out it's my router, WRT54G Linksys, i guess this router doesn't like anything involving p2p kinda stuff and the suggested fix was for an upgrade firmware with a third party software and i don't wanna try that but i did upgrade with the linksys firmware and while it says i'm still not connectable i do notice faster upload speeds. i did have this router for a while so maybe just time for a new one. if anyone knows of this problem and can suggest a router that doesn't have this problem please suggest one. Thanks again for the help.

Yeah, some routers are just that way.... I have a NetGear WGR614 v4 and after following portforward's info, it worked great (still does)! I'm not sure if they still make that particular model, this one is about 18months or 2 years old... anyway, I'm glad my tips helped you discover the problem, and you did the right thing by NOT using 3rd party firmware. When you decide on a router, let us here at MG know, and if you need help, we're here!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, I wanted to mention that my router (the Netgear above) gets really good torrent speeds: up to 700k down, up to about 450k or 500k up, using uTorrent. These aren't average speeds, just the highest I've seen (maybe 2 or 3 times) with a torrent. I average about 200k-300k down, and about 150k or so up. Configuring the port and IP properly made a HUGE difference; before portforward's info, I was lucky to get 40k down and 50k up with uTorrent.... of course, with torrents, it all really depends on the seeders and overall health of a particular download. Here's a link to the 'BitTorrent Bible' in .PDF format that is a must read (IMO) for torrent folks: http://rapidshare.com/files/16163285/The_BitTorrent_Bible__www.NewTorrents.info_.pdf.html Click the 'FREE' button all the way at the bottom....
