Whenever I start downloading/uploading a torrent on uTorrent the internet doesn't work. It doesn't connect to any sites and on firefox it just says The connection has timed out. I've tried changing several settings, but to no avail.

uTorrent also seems to be crashing a lot.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1.

Make sure you limit your upload speed to about 80-90% of maximum.

Two things to try to determine your max speed.

    1) With one or more popular torrents running; mouse over the utorrent icon in the task bar and write down the upload speed. Then multiply this number by 0.85 Take this smaller number and set it as your global upload maximum. [You can right click the icon again and select upload and choose a number from the list or do it in Preferences>Connection]

    2) Stop all torrents and any other downloads. In utorrent main window Options>speed guide. Run the speed guide and write down the number for upload speed. Divide this number by 8 and then multiply the answer by 0.85. Enter under preferences>Conection. [It is somewhat confusing because the speed test is in different units then utorrent runs. You will get a number like 670kb but your final speed for utorrent will be around 70kB after the math.]

Basically, you have only so much bandwidth. If you allow utorrent to use it all then FF doesn't have any left to surf the web. The general rule is to give 80% to utorrent but I find I can give 85-90% without a problem. If your browsing is too slow at 85% or 90% you can always drop down a few kB's until things run smoothly.

Thanks for the help but reducing the upload speed didn't do anything, but I found out that nod32 can cause problems with uTorrent. I didn't have nod32 but I tried uninstalling Mcafee security centre which i did have. That fixed the problem, but I wonder why uTorrent wouldn't work with mcafee?
