It seems that today i got a virus, or malware of some variety. This virus seems to stop me running anything to do with viruses, eg. antivirus software. Even searching for solutions on google or clicking links cause the browser to shut down. I've tried running AntiVir in safe mode but that didnt fix things.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

I have just posted this thread before, the reason i did it in 'software problems' is that i cant click on the malaware link because of the virus.
Please dont move it again. Oh and hijack this didnt work.

Sounds like you got it bad bro.

I've seen viruses that can stop specific antivirus programs but don't know of any that can do them all. That's why Chas goes through so many different ones in the malware forum. So if you can get some others and run them so much the better. Panda for instance checks the system, from the CD before installation.

Another approach is to get a boot CD with AV and run it external to Windows.
I like Norton for this because I can include the latest database.

Yet another approach is to make a BartPE boot disk including AV and run that.

Finally if you have a rootkit (likely) then (sorry Chas, blacklight and friends)
there is no way to be certain of removing it short of a reformat and clean installation of Windows. This last may be your best option.

Remember a rootkit cannot install itself in a limited user account. Never surf the net as an administrator.

Your course of action depends upon your resources. Tell us more so that we can advise further.

Cheers, hadn't thought of that one, i'll try getting a mate to burn me a disk.
I am very reluctant to format my hard drives though, hopefully it wont come to that, looks like i have to go and get about 30 blank DVDs though:mad

Another thing, runing in safe mode usually disables a lot of viruses and malware, that is where you want to run your virus scanners. Tends to clean them up better too.

Well, yesterday i tried the boot disk thing, it didnt work, but i did mange to get hijack this to work, and i think it got rid of the virus, temporarily atleast, because now that i have restarted my computer it's back. so looks like the only option left is to format everything which is just thouroughly depressing but, if needs must. Thanks for everyones help anyway it is much appreciated.
...I'd best get burning a few DVDs then.

Never had the problem, AVG works fine. It is usually recommended advice for malware removal.

Doesnt matter now anyway, I used safe mode in DSREPAIR i think its called and managed to do a system restore, that seems to have fixed the problem, so... happy days:)
