Vanishing Toolbars

Not only does my Quick Launch toolbar vanish on restarting the computer but also any other toolbars I create. The new toolbars work after I create them and they are listed when I right click on the taskbar but those also vanish on a restart. I rely quite heavily on these toolbars and would love to be able to use them again. It's just too much effort to create new ones each time I start the computer. I have right clicked on the toolbar and been to properties and checked the Quicklaunch square, locked and unlocked the toolbars, all to no avail. Help please.
    My OS is XP Pro.

Do you have any CLEANUP software loaded?
    Any Cover-Your-Tracks software?
    Any TWEAKING programs?

Have you checked your startups to see whether you have a registry key running an eraser-cleaner at boot?

Do you have Startup CPL or a similar startup manager? (If you go for Startup CPL, get the standalone executable version, not the one that installs, and then lodges in your Control Panel.)

Gave up on this problem in the early hours of the morning and went to bed. This afternoon on boot up same old problem so chickened out and did a restore to a week ago. All was well so did another 6 days ago, still OK. Continued until 2 days ago when the problem came back. So I restored another 24 hours previous to that so that I was back to normal and now all I have to do is find out what changes I made that brought the problem on. Hopefully.

    Wayta GO, CDI!

Another minor victory for System Restore.

It just dazzles me that so many people dislike or distrust SR. I've practically written a BOOK about it on this forum and others, just because I like, it, I trust it, I think it's one of the best features of XP, and I've had my bacon SAVED by it a whole bunch of times with no problems whatsoever.

But I still shut it down to clean it out once a week (then reboot and re-set it to run). It works perfectly when it's not restricted for disk-space use, but IS cleared periodically, and it seems (at least this has been my experience with clients' broken machines) to get into (undocumented) trouble when the highest RP number is 90 or above, no matter how few other RPs are present in the folder, so clearing all but the latest RP (in Disk Cleanup) may not be a good option as a routine maintenance procedure. (That keeps the RP index number climbing.) I recommend shutting it off to clear it, then rebooting and restarting with a clean slate at RP1.

    Ok. Off the soapbox, werdz!

    Re: I would NEVER....

I disabled mine because of a really bad experience with it... It screwed up, erased my files, killed windows, and I had to reinstall my op system.

Yeah, Mr F, you're one of the ones I've seen negative posts from, and I've always wondered what went wrong on YOUR box with a system that shouldn't ever cause any harm at all (except excess consumption of space if left uncleaned forever (or 90 days, whichever comes first)).

I mean, if you don't RESTORE a Restore Point, it's just insurance that you MIGHT be able to take advantage of down the road, and if you're in such deep trouble that you need to USE a Restore Point, I would think it's a pretty safe way to try to roll back to the last snapshot.

Sorry you had a bad experience with it, though.

What went wrong: system was messed up, so I used system restore. It appered to have restored properly, but when I looked harder, i noticed that most of my exe's were gone, with my library of 1200 games. The games were unrecoverable, and couldn't be downloaded again. I had most of the games archived on a zip, which survived, but I only had 64 mb to put everything I needed on before I reinstalled my op. It also destroyed a ton of items in the program files folder.

And I did try to undo the restore, it failed, I had made an undo restore point, it couldn't restore to the undo point I made. I was screwed.
