Various BSOD errors - Windows Vista

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate on a Sony VAIO laptop and am getting numerous, assorted blue screen errors.

Windows nearly always boots without error, and the laptop seems to sit quite happily if it's not being used.

Seems to crash more frequently when a few things are going on - so a few tabs open in Google Chrome, or playing youtube, for example. The BSOD and stop codes really vary. I've had problems with netio.sys, athr.sys, bad pool caller, IRQL not less or equal and memory management errors.

Would it help if I attached the minidump files or anything like that?

Any help with this much appreciated. It seems completely unpredictable and is driving me mad!

    Thanks,

    James

I read over your earlier thread

to get a feel for what is going on.

Assorted BSOD errors might point to bad RAM.
Since you never mentioned your model number, I'm not sure if the RAM has to be in matched pairs. If it does not, take one stick out and use the laptop - note it will run slower because of less RAM. If it seems to work without a problem, then it might mean the other stick is the problem.

Thanks plodr! Took one stick out and same problems, but put that back in and took the other out and it seems to be running fine now. No crashes at all since I did that. Is it best just to buy some new RAM and add that?

Goto www.crucial.com, and it will analyze your 'puter and show you what you need. You can either order direct from there or just print the specs and take it to your local shop. After S&H, price will be very close. :wave:wave

Yup. buy a new stick or two. Use brandypeppy's link so you know EXACTLY what you need. Then you can either buy locally or a place like newegg online.
You can use your working stick with whatever you purchase.
