    hey, everybody.

So a couple of weeks ago my computer stopped booting. It goes to a screen with options like safe mode, safe mode with stuff, last known good config, start normally, etc. If you go with start normally or last known good, it flashes a BSOD with an error about NTFS.sys. The screen is up for like less than a second, so I don't think I can get much more information than that. If you go with safe mode, it gets part way through a big list of files and then says "Windows can't start because the file System32/Drivers/ntfs.sys" is missing or corrupt." It also says use the repair disk to fix it. So I put in the repair disk, and it's loading some stuff, and then it says something about "sparrow.sys" being corrupt. I try it again, but this time it's "pcmcia.sys" that's corrupt. The third time it said "setupdd.sys" was corrupt, and also said that the error code was 4. The fourth time, it went to a BSOD and said that "acpi.sys" was missing or corrupt, and there was some other hexadecimal type stuff.

I have two hard drives. The master is a Maxtor 120 gig, the slave is a Wester Digital 80 gig.

I can't recall what exactly I was doing when this happened. I think it just randomly wouldn't boot up one afternoon. I might have accidentally unplugged it while it was running. If you need more info, I'd be happy to supply it. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

    Hi and welcome to MajorGeeks.

Use the Recovery Console steps outlined HERE and HERE.

I put the cd in and I actually got to the recovery console this time. I did all the stuff that the sites said I should, but when I rebooted, the same errors came up. I tried to do the recovery console thing again, but when I tried to use the cd, it kept saying that different .sys files were missing or corrupt so setup couldn't continue. One time it even said "setupreg.hiv" was corrupt. It said different files each time and got to various places in the loading process, so I'm not certain that the files are actually corrupt. I'm really not at all sure what to do if I can't use the setup cd.

Are you sure you precisely followed the steps, especially in the 2nd link?

If you did, and if you have already tried a Repair, you will have to consider a format and fresh install.

I followed the instructions on the second site. The recovery console said that the file had been copied. If a reformatting is required, I guess I'll just have to do that. Thanks for your help!

    You're welcome.

Unfortunately, you don't have any other option.

It won't start in any mode, and a Repair and Recovery Console aren't helping.
