Various problems after bad memory install

I'm not sure if I should be posting this in the hardware vs. software forum, but here goes:

Recently, I upgraded my PC with some new memory. I started seeing a lot of strange problems on my PC that I thought was malware, and so I tried doing all the security things as stated in the Malware guide. I found that I could not install ANY antivirus solutions, I had a lot of spyware that I didn't know about, and both my CD-ROM and DVD/CD-ROM drives were disabled (corrupted drivers and system wouldn't replace after I uninstalled and reinstalled).

Out of sheer desparation, I did a memory test and found the new memory was bad (I used MemTest). I then removed the bad memory from my PC and replaced it with the OEM memory, and no more memory errors occurred on re-test. I was then able to install an antivirus program (Avira) and scanned my whole system - it came back clean.

However, I still cannot resolve the problems with my CD-ROM and DVD/CD-ROM drives. Discs cannot be read in either drive that can be read in another PC. Device Manager shows the drives as installed but apparently with bad drivers. I'm stuck - how do I proceed?

 

Go back into device manager and uninstall them drives, restart, windows will find new hardware and reinstall with drivers. ed

 

Thanks for the response. I tried this but it did not solve the problem. After I deleted the drives in Device Manager and rebooted, the drives reappeared in Device Manager.

Each of the drives has a yellow exclamation point icon over it to indicate a problem with the driver. How should I proceed now?

 

I think I fixed the problem -- my wonderful boyfriend found this article on the Microsoft site, and I followed its instructions to the letter!
