I have now got an iPAD and Kindle and soon to get a Nexus and of course have a Windows 7/8 and Ubuntu laptop(s) as all Geeks on this forums have. I am wondering how best to use each of these (steady there, one at a time!) to read my emails which are of course in several accounts on different hosts. A sort of many2many topology.

I assume I would need IMAP. Has anyone configured each or any of these devices so that emails are all available at any time whichever client is used?

Much appreciate some advice here (as I'm not quite a Geek as you may think).

Not everyone has that many devices. I mainly use my netbook for when I am watching tv and browsing the web. My wife uses her iPad to check out Facebook, email, web surfing. We have a Nook with a n2a card in it, that we have had before the iPad hit the home, which gets used every now and then, but mainly just sits on the coffee table shut down.

As for iMap, depends on if your provider allows it, but Pop works for the majority.

Not the exact same mix but many systems here using Windows variants, Linux variants, and Android ICS. All use IMAP with gmail making everything email related available on every machine that requires it. That isn't achievable with POP.

Thinking about it a bit more, I could of course just use the browser on each device keeping everything in the cloud (on the hosts). That way I just need to setup each browser on each device. Most common browser would be Safari I guess. If I use Imap I just need to copy the folders I have currently on outlook. So then I would have email clients on the tablets and Linux but use browser in windows. Maybe as Brownizs says use each device for a set of activities as the original intention was Kindle for books, iPAD to take over from Windows (large laptop) for browsing (and books, entertinment), windows for graphical stuff. Skype everywhere of course (that one seems to be the most integrated out of the box as it were and the more like browser email way of doing things). Still need to clear my head on this one.

If you do choose to go IMAP you do NOT copy your outlook folders to the other machines. IMAP creates its own folders on both server and client and keeps them in sync. But you could, as you say, just use webmail on some or all of the machines, or whatever mix of POP, IMAP and webmail best suits your needs.

Absolutely right! I will go and consider these options.
