I just got VBasic 4.0 for 95 new off Ebay for $5.

Unfortunately, it seems M$ could of cared less about the accuracy of their built in tutorial. I'm doing the Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion exercise, very first example to create. It tells me on the 'Control' (textbox) to choose for a procedure the 'keypress' option. However, only the form code procedure dropdown menu has 'keypress' as an option. The code template for my two control boxes do not have this option. I have checked and double checked and I am reading the tutorial correctly. It is not referring to the form code but for the control (textbox) code procedure dropdown list, and it isn't on there. I'll try to attach a picture of it.

Well, apparently I can't attach the jpeg images, as they are just a little too big. Grrr...

Anyway, I'm kinda stuck until I can figure out what the deal is here. Anyone have any ideas?

What are you trying to make this thing do? like whats gonna happen and everything.

Its a relatively simple exercise to convert inputed Celsius numbers into Fahrenheit and vise versa.

I think I figured out how to reduce the size of the jpg so they will fit.

OK I got it. Clipboard01 shows the actual form in VB 4.0 with the template window for the control(textbox) code and the options I am given. Clip02 shows the tutorial window with the options I am suppose to have in the control template window. As you can see from this, where the 'Keypress' procedure option should be on the actual VB window, it's just not there. Although the tutorial says it should be. M$ Grrrrr......

hmm, im not sure about vbasic that much but but couldn't you just make an input and then it will take that variable and convert it? then print it out? what do you need the keypress command for?

the keypress command/procedure is so the program will recognize a keypress(enter) that input is finished being put in. And since 'enter' is usually the most common form of this being accomplished, or some other 'keypress' I really need to sort this out.

since this is vbasic couldn't you just put a button in there? lol that would seem like a good way, and then it will be enter by default also.

I guess I could use a button, damn stupid of M$ not to quality check their freakin documentation. Or their program.

BTW, the MG website does not get along with Juno's speedband function very well. Most of the time I have to turn speedband off to view a page.

well you did get the program for $5, so i guess you can't complain. But then again, that is an older version.

:: yeah i would use the button and besides, it looks better :)

Older schmolder. I don't think M$ has changed its ways any since then. And $5 or not, it is brand new, still in its shrinkwrap when I got it.

Hmmm did a bit of Visual Basic a LONG time ago... had a quick squint at your jpegs and it looks to me like you are trying to associate the 'key press' functionality with a label not a text/control box.

If you look at their example they have a field where you can enter text. Of course you can bind code for certain key presses to that - such as trapping the return key being pressed. But you are trying to do that to a Label, which is for the most part uninteractive with the user.

The Label is the icon with the capital 'a', or A in, a text/control box is the icon to the right of it with the 'ab|' in a text box type picture. Make sense? Both icons are on the second row.

Im sure if you get the right one it will work just fine. Let me know if you get any more problems... I may be able to help.

    Cheers,
    Greg

Well I checked again and yes, you are right. I was trying to asociate it with a label, instead of the textbox next to it. Please forgive me for the interruption, I am a horses ass.

hehe dont worry about it - you are learning, and part of learning is making mistakes... when I was learning VB way back when I found it really useful to create a form and whack a whole load of the controls in there so that I could tweak them and work out what made them work and what you could do with them.

This can be done outside the bounds of a standard tutorial that may introduce something like a text/control box but then not mention what some of the properties are and how you can manipulate these in your program and what you can do....

Good luck with the learning and dont be afraid to ask questions or make mistakes - its all a part of the process.

    Cheers,
    Greg

Yeah, I don't think its possible to make a program of any size without making at least one mistake-its just part of programming.
