   when i open a file, and store it in a string var, i get the whole path, is there a way to just get the file name???? ie test.txt instread of C:\docs\blah\test.txt

   What are you using to open? Common Dialog control?
   
   If so try
   
   Commondialog1.FileTitle
   
   I think that gives you just the file name while
   
   Commondialog1.Filename
   
   Give you the whole string
