VBA? Custom Excel Functions...hmm

I have some limited experience programming, VB, .NET, XML, Oracle. About one year. I am no longer programming but would like to leverage that experience into my new career.

I plan to become an excel poweruser. I want to write functions for excel. Is this VBA? Are excel functions 'Marcos'? Where do i start?

yes excel functions are macros.

 

whenever you have opportunity.. use VBA.. Macro's suck.

 

yeah, u can't do much with them and its not really a true programming language

 

oh, and since you're going to be using Excel.. I would like to offer this one piece of advice and you'll thank me for it later. If you ever have a conversation where they want you to build or you want to build an excel sheet to TRACK or record HISTORICAL records you should instantly audit your reasoning to use Excel. MS Access is best suited for tracking and recording historical data. That's what databases do. Sheets can get ugly real quick. You can pump out any data you need to an excel sheet if you need to (from the database).

Great thread guys. I do understand the limitations and my reasons for wanting to know really are just to increase my efficiencies in excel.

But what i still dont know is...Where do i find the IDE? What do I click to pull the window up? If recall properly, it looks like a VB window. Right?
