Hi...what do you mean that it lost it's memory? What exactly are you experiencing? It's been a very long time since I've used a VCR, but I don't remember them as being anything but analog, with maybe the ability to time a recording on your tape?

There is no memory. If you have it hooked up to a cable tv since everything is digital, the clock no longer works. Ours stopped showing the time years ago.
The programs are digital so it can no longer record. (We have 3 VCRs hooked up to tvs just to watch old tapes). All you can do with it is watch tapes.

I don't think that's the reason; it is because the signals are digital and not analog. A VCR can't handle digital signals. Our VCR has been showing lines where the time was when Comcast stopped broadcasting analog signals and changed everything to digital.

What brand and model is the VCR? How do you get your tv signal?

    Sorry, Laura!

I did read instructions on how to set the time on a VCR. I'll have to see if it works because we have a mandatory cable box. It took me the longest time to figure out what needs to be plugged in what order.
We have to use Comcast's supplied remote then switch to the remote for the combo VCR/DVD burner unit.

The manual says if the vcr is disconnected from the wall socket for more than one minute you must reset the clock. In case you have forgotten how, here are the relevant sections -

That's exactly what happens on my unit. I turn on the tv, change it to VCR as input then press setup on the VCR remote and nothing shows up on the tv screen so I can't do a thing to set it up. I've stared at blank lines where the clock used to appear for years.

Is it possible that it may recently have been moved from a cold room to a warmer one? This causes condensation as it says above.

If you are asking me, NO, the unit has remained in the same spot for years.

One day, the clock stopped and showed blank lines and it has been that way ever since.

It's just that he says it was working a couple of weeks ago. That wouldn't have been possible if the problem was the analog digital switchover - that was ten years ago. I don't understand though how the op can say he has been using it not so long ago, I wouldn't have thought you could record digital tv on a vcr.

What you're describing sounds like the electronics are starting to go. Does it still play tapes? Does the remote work for things other than menu? If the playback and remote are still there, then the player is just dying of old age. Unfortunately, as robust as the electronics are, they still have a limited lifespan.

It isn't going. Tapes and DVDs play fine. The remote for the VCR/DVD recorder works fine for stopping, starting, menu, pausing fast forward, etc. As I said, once Comcast stopped sending analog and changed to all digital, the clock stopped displaying the time. Everything else works properly.

We need to use the Comcast remote first to change to aux unit then we switch to the remote for the combo unit.

    This is inevitable.
