VCR question

I have a Sony VCR recorder/player ModelSLV-N51 today I set the recorder to record a program at a later time. As soon as I set the time, station and so on then when I set it to record the Letter "J" came up and it started recording right away. The only way to stop it was to hit the stop button.

I know there is a way to clear this off but I cannot remember how.

Would appreciate any help
