Vcr---remote Control

I have a sony vcr and remote control. A problem has occured. It has a timer on it but when I get it all set to record at a later time and shut it off to record it does not shur down and show the recording on the vcr instead a flashing light that says timer and it will not show rec., I have to unplug it to shut it down.
If any one would have any idea on how to correct this, I would appreciate it

 

Since it is likely that VCR is many years old (nobody makes VCRs anymore), it is also likely it has decided to finally fail. If unplugging and plugging it back in again does not reset it, then it is likely the controller board has developed a fault. If you can find a local shop who still works on them, you can try that, but if parts are needed, that may be difficult.
