Unfortunately, it's being released on Verizon's CDMA network and not their LTE 4G network. :(

Seems like typical marketing. Get all the initial business from the new addition and then release the new one in another 6 months or 1 year so you get people to buy it again.

Thats a bit of a letdown not being on 4G network, concidering that is in part a selling point of the iPhone 4G!!

and pretty poor on Apple not actually having the phone work on 1st Gen 4G networks and Verizon have a 4G network thats out of date before its even taken off with 4G phones being the norm.

Wonder what the data plans are for it, as in the UK we are having a bit of a data crunch from the networks in reducing the unlimited plans we used to have (only the 3 Network have unlimited, but poor coverage) to 1GB and 500mb per month.

Verizon's LTE network is up and running. They have other phones available to run on it.

I think it's a ploy by both companies to get more sales when they release the iPhone for the faster network.

How much do you want to bet it's available in about 6 months?

I'm not sure on the data plans, but I bet it's the same as the Blackberry. For us it's $29.99 a month unlimited.

The thing I don't get is the 5 machine hotspot. Does that mean you can use your iphone to connect with your laptop?

Yeah just a pity that the iPhone doesnt work with it yet as you say they may have a firmware update at some point.

For your $29.99 a mth is that also including the calls or data plan only?

Yes the iPhone can tether to a laptop and now create a wifi hotspot (but I would check on if that is an extra cost as I know tethering is in the UK for the iPhone, hence why I went Windows Mobile)

$29.99 includes unlimited everything....data, calls, texts, etc.

    According to the article:

Ah good on the call and data charge per month, and didnt see that in the article, so thats good and the wifi hotspot thing does work ok on Windows mobile, so should do equally well on the iPhone, personally I tether mine and the data download speeds are around 500kb/s ~ 1.25mb/s which is good enough for my netbook (im on HSDPA 3G)

I'm on Verizon now and am up for an upgrade on my phone. Right now I have a Blackberry that's still working great.

I think I'm going to use up every ounce of will power and play the waiting game as far as seeing when a newer version of the iphone comes out.

I would too as Apple have a habbit of a 12mth release phase for new hardware and with some of the issues of the current iPhone 4G I would not be suprised to see a ver2 model released this current year.

my current contract is up in 4mths but I'm likely to go with another Windows Mobile and the new Windows Mobile 7.

I fully agree with both of you especially after reading this:

“Verizon's iPhone version will work only on the carrier's current "3G" network even though the carrier has fired up a faster "4G" network in many cities. That super-fast wireless data network is available only to plug-in laptop modems for now, but Verizon will have smart phones for it this summer.”
“Cook said the first generation of "4G" phone chips would have forced some design compromises, which Apple wasn't willing to make.”
“The lack of 4G means the Verizon iPhone will have much slower data speeds than AT&T's, at least in the areas where AT&T has upgraded its 3G network. AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel was quick to point this out, along with the fact that users won't be able to surf and talk at the same time on the Verizon iPhone. International roaming will also be very limited compared with the AT&T version.”
“However, Verizon has much wider domestic 3G coverage than AT&T does, especially in the interior of the country. In the big cities of the coasts, iPhone service can be spotty because of crowding on AT&T's network.”
“Cook wouldn't say if Verizon will get the iPhone 5 when it debuts this summer, if Apple follows its regular once-a-year upgrade schedule.”
“Verizon's iPhone 4 is identical in form and function to AT&T's but has one feature AT&T's does not: It can act as a portable Wi-Fi "hot spot," connecting up to five laptops or other devices to Verizon's 3G network through Wi-Fi. It's a feature that's been offered on other smart phones, usually for an added monthly fee.”

LMAO and nothing to be ashamed of I think ;) but they are good phones as an entry into smart phones.

My contract has been up for a couple of months and frankly, I was sick of waiting. My blackberry Storm is slow and I despise the set up.

Most of my music was bought on itunes and I really don't feel like trying to convert it so I can listen on something else, so iphone here I come. LOL

I think you'll like it better than the BB.

What I would suggest is always check for update to iTunes before doing any updates to the iOS of the phone and if an update is offered for iOS, download but dont install for a few days wait to see if the update is ok. I've had a few updates to iOS that have had me needing to reset the phone to factory.

I have no doubt I'll like it better than my BB. I liked it when I first got it, but now, over 2 years later, it just seems really slow.

Thanks for the tips on the updates. Does it have to be plugged in to a computer the same as an ipod to get the updates?

Yep the updates come via iTunes the same was as your iPod.

Dont know if you have multiple iPods in the house connected to same iTunes app, but its worth using Playlists for the seperate devices and sync to them only over taking all from the master Library as the is the tendency to sync and wipe what you put on one device with the others music etc

Okay...i didn't even know you could download and not install. I just do it all at once.

Yep. I do have playlists and generally select what I want on my itouch. My kids use the desktop for their itouches. They've got all their crappy music on their itunes and we don't share between the computers here.

I may have questions after I get this thing.

Mmm now I think about it maybe I'm wrong and thats just the iTunes updates or maybe not, I'm sure there is an option when you see an update to download and install and a download only.

Yeah I think playlists are the way to go, seen some friends moan that their stuff has gone missing only to find out that they sync to the main library,

I'm not sure either, Dave. You may be right. I've just never paid attention.

Well, they told me I was going to be receiving it somewhere around Feb 10, but I just got an email saying it has shipped. That's surprising and very cool. At least I don't have to wait 'til the release date for it.

Hey thats good Laura, shipped should take a few days max?

LauraR MajorGeeks Super-Duper Administrator Staff Member

Nope. One day here. Verizon always ships overnight. :) It's actually in the next town over in their UPS facility. hmmmm...tomorrow being Saturday though may mean Monday. I figure anytime between this afternoon and monday. Probably Saturday since they do deliver on weekends.

Yeah, guess it was a presale and not a preorder which I had assumed when they said it would ship Feb 10.
