    Hi Guys,

    How on earth can I type the vertical unbroken bar? It's on my keyboard, top left , along with ¬ and `.

    Please tell us the Brand and exact model of your system.
    Is it a Laptop, Desktop PC or Tablet
    The vertical bar on my laptop keyboard is at the BOTTOM left to the left of the key for letter Z. The vertical bar is above the back slash.
    On my two spare USB keyboards it is in the same place as my laptop keyboard.

    This sounds like it's a laptop computer since it has 3 characters on the same key. You may need to press the Fn Key along with the character key.

    @mdonah
    It's probably best to wait for the OP to return. The OP needs to confirm their KB and whether or not its a standard English KB layout.
    If you look at these two images of a standard QWERTY keyboard for a USB KB and a standard Laptop KB, the vertical bar key is in exactly the same place - not where the OP suggests - and requires no function key other than the shift key to print it.
    So laptop or wired KB appears not relevant.

    LAPTOP KB:

    The Vertical bar is bottom left to the left of the Z key.

    @MaxTurner ,

    The OP PMed me to confirm my suspicion.

    Yes - it's the same on any keyboard. Bottom far left not top far left.

    On my two laptops, the vertical bar and backslash are below the Backspace key next to the right bracket and brace key.

    My three keyboards are:
    Laptop - Novatech UK made
    USB:
    Dell - China
    Silvercrest - Germany
    The vertical bar is in the same place on all three.

    Mine are En=US. I don't know why US and UK/China/Germany are different in their layouts.

    Yes, I've just looked at images of about 10 different Dell (US) KBs and they are not at all consistent except for letters!

    Sorry guys,
    I'm a dork. My keys are really a disgrace and I must clean them. The symbol on the bottom left looked just like a broken bar.
    Thanks a bunch all

    Exactly. My Inspiron has a separate numeric keypad so, if I want to enter a special character (like the degree symbol [Alt + 0176]), I just press those keys. But my Latitude doesn't have a separate numeric keypad so, I have to press Fn + Alt plus the number keys located within the M, J, K, L, U, I, O, 7, 8 and 9 keys.
