Hey guys, I'm running a year and a half old Compaq Presario CQ60, and have noticed as it's got older it's got hotter and hotter on the surface. Out of curiosity I ran everest to see what the temperature inside is like. The CPU is a comfortable 37C, but somewhat amazingly "TOSHIBA MK1652GSX" which is the hard disk I think, is registering a temperature of 63C!! The laptop has been on about 8 or 9 hours, and is on a wooden desk. So far the laptop is not showing any major problems, no mystery crashes or anything.

I've checked all the vents and they seem ok, I'm cautious about using compressed air on the vents, because it's a smallish laptop and I don't want to damage the components.

Basically 63C seems to be far too hot, but I thought I would check with you guys as to whether this is a problem? I don't want to wear out the laptop any faster, especially as I experienced a laptop failure a year and a half ago, that was two days out of warranty. This laptop is in extended warranty.

    What do you guys think?

    EDIT:

Just checked CPU Temperature using coretemp and it's giving a reading of 99C... :S

I do not know what acceptable temps are but I run all my laptops with anything to cool them. Take two rulers, put them under each side. Anything to get the airflow going so the laptop isn't sitting directly on the desk.

I bought mats for my notebooks. (I did not want to plug anything into a USB port and lose the port). As the pad absorbs the heat from the notebook, the crystals inside turn to gel.
    It looks like this

Hey thanks for the suggestion on the mat, looks like a pretty cool idea! I'll see if I can find one.

By the way does anyone know what the acceptable temperature should be?

If you are in the US, Staples carries them.
