WinXP Home SP2 - I've tried Firefox and IE, and either browser takes FOREVER to open. Once it's open and running, I can surf nice and fast as usual, but the browsers take at least 30 seconds to open, sometimes up to a minute. I have checked the stuff running in the background, and resources are not being sucked up by a rogue process running amok. I've run some malware scans, and visually checked for nasties, and all appears to be clean. I've done all the standard maintenance stuff, and even uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox. No dice. So.... any ideas on why the browsers take FOREVER to open?

    Thanks!

Same in FF safe mode and IE without addons? If not, then I'd suspect some addon creating a problem.
As you open a browser, do ctrl + alt+del and see what is using most of the resources.

Has there been a gradual increase in browser launch time over a period of time or did this seem to start abruptly? What versions of the browsers are you using? Have you ever installed SP3 for Win XP?

What are basic hardware specs for your system?

Did a quick check, on my system, takes about less than a second to open firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.3a1pre) Gecko/20091023 Minefield/3.7a1pre (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)

Do you mean the specs below the horizontal line? That shows XP Pro SP3. But, in his post, he mentions XP Home, SP2. So, looks like two different computers.

By the way, that info only appears on my screen when not logged on to the forum. What's going on there?

dlb fixes computers. He isn't working on the one in the tagline; he's working on someone else's computer.

And he's not reported on what the solution was - if found - so we could fix our own personal version of the same problem.

Why not post your Sys specks, OS and SP, version of IE and FF in a new thread. Along with the exact issues even if same :) As for dlb not posting-boils down to each Pc being different and the fix might have been peculiar to it. I'm sure dlb will come in to this thread or your new one with excellent inputs..
    Cheers
