Very Sluggish system

I originally posted in the malware section and that seemed to solve my problems for about a week. I've run several MBAM scans and nothing is being found, so I was advised to post my issues here.

Basically, programs are running then not responding over and over again. I've noticed this issue the most with Microsoft Word and Google Chrome, but essentially all programs will do this. Any suggestions on how to get my system back to normal will be greatly appreciated.

Here are my system specs, if I missed any pertinent info let me know and I will get it posted.

    The thread in malware http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=282784
indicates the sluggishness happened after some Windows updates.
Look over your update history and post by KB exactly which updates were installed in late December or early January.

Geez ploder, you're like the forum's one person CIA. Nothing gets past you.

SMonster50, there are a multitude of things that could be causing the sluggishness of your system and you could be very diligent and address them one by one and have this drag out for a week or more, or (now that malware is ruled out)..... you could use the "Fix it all, Fix it now" approach. My own system has at times become sluggish and each time I've been able to significantly restore speed by using Tweaking.com All-In-One Windows Repair Tool:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/tweaking_com_windows_repair.html

Download it, install it, run it, and it will walk you through the steps of effectuating a comprehensive fix. It will probably take several hours to complete, so factor that into your schedule. The process may not end up being effective but it also doesn't do anything that can't be reversed with the restore point and reg backup that you'll create prior to the repairs. If you have any questions or problems, just drop a line in here.

I actually had a lot of failed updates when this issue first presented itself. After clearing out the malware issue, I still had problems with the updates so I actually used the tweaking.com tool as suggested in a similar thread. It fixed my update issues and my system was running fine for a few days, then it went back to being sluggish again. I will re-download and go through the steps again to see if that helps.

Here are the updates I've done since the first run through with the tweaking tool:

Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 suites (KB2837615)
    Installation date: ‎1/‎14/‎2014 11:56 PM
    Installation status: Successful
    Update type: Important

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 for Windows Vista (KB2858725)
    Installation date: ‎1/‎14/‎2014 11:55 PM
    Installation status: Successful
    Update type: Recommended

Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2687455) 32-Bit Edition
    Installation date: ‎1/‎14/‎2014 11:45 PM
    Installation status: Successful
    Update type: Important

Security Update for Microsoft Office Word 2007 (KB2837617)
    Installation date: ‎1/‎14/‎2014 11:36 PM
    Installation status: Successful
    Update type: Important

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2014 (KB890830)
    Installation date: ‎1/‎14/‎2014 11:35 PM
    Installation status: Successful
    Update type: Important

Make sure you do the chkdsk and sfc steps in the tweaking.com repair tool.... and make sure you create a system restore point and registry back up before that.

Because your system functioned correctly for several days following the last round of Windows Updates, I would look for some other reason for the slow down. Could you please provide a link to the other thread you mentioned in your last post (where you were advised to use the Tweaking.com repair tool). Thanks

I don't run Vista and my Win 7 computers do not have the MS Office Suite. One of them uses Corel X6 Suite.
So based on what I installed on the XP computer running Office 2007:
KB2837615 and KB2837617 were installed in early January and shows no sluggishness.

KB890830 gets installed monthly on 6 computers (XP and 7).

This one KB2858725 I have skipped, so try uninstalling that.
I do have NET 4.5 installed but not 4.5.1 from November 2013.

On my Win 7 computer (I only have NET 4.5 on one computer), it was listed under optional so I did not even have to hide it.

I did a google search on the issue I was having and it took me to a different forum, but here is the link:

    http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/80096001-windows-update-wont-work.182030/

I re-ran the tweaking.com tool and everything loaded extremely slow today when I booted up. I am going to try some of the suggestions ploder had and go from there.

You mentioned a slow boot. Is your PC still operating poorly after boot? Sometimes, after an episode of some kind, a reboot can take longer. Windows has some built in fix measures during boot, so when something unusual happens during a session, the OS might scan over some OS data and make adjustments.

Has anyone suggested looking over the Event Viewer? Just type Event Viewer in the search box to open the viewer. Look for errors and see what they are associated with. Then take a look at the specifics of the errors by clicking on them. Sometimes knowing the specific types of error events you are having can help with a fix...

One other thing...do you regularly defrag and remove temporary internet files (empty browser caches)? In just one day of using Firefox, I have seen 300 MB of cache files in the Firefox internet temp cache. For this reason, I clean the internet caches every day, and I think it's an important practice. Performing this type of cleaning daily promotes general PC health. Don't recommend it for any of the other check box settings for file or registry key removal in CCleaner, but I do recommend removing temporary internet files daily...
