Well, I can't seem to log into Window's anymore:

Since about 3 days ago, every time I'd start up my computer, the computer would get stuck on the "Windows is starting up" screen (right before you enter your password) for a good 4-5 minutes. After it finally passes this, and I enter my password, the screen goes black and an error message says "Windows cannot log in because the domain JORDAN is unavailable." Or something similar. (JORDAN is my computer name.)

The only thing I'm able to do right now is get into safe mode. I've tried making new accounts and the same thing happens. I've tried taking the password off the account so it boots straight to desktop, and for some reason it goes to the password screen and there is now a guest login thing that I can't seem to remove (or don't know how.)

I've also tried going into msconfig and disabling all the (non-microsoft) services and startup stuff, same thing still happens. (Hang time, then error message.)

I can't recall doing anything at all out of the ordinary the last few days before it happened, didn't download anything suspicious or anything that I know of. I've also run Avast!, ad-aware, Spy Catcher, and some other things and nothing I found significant was found. (Actually, Avast! found something, said it was some sort of virus, but I deleted it and still the same thing happens.)

I can't do a System Restore, I think it was this site that told me to turn it off the last time I had a problem.

    Any suggestions/ideas?

    Thanks,
    Jordan

A few more things I kind of forgot.

    1) I've ran Registry Mechanic as well.
    2) I've attached a hijack this log file just in case you guys need it.
(Interceptor.dll is fine (I know what it is I'm pretty sure) and fastload.dll is fine too.) Everything else looks good to me, but I dont know what the last "O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - C:\WINDOWS\" is.

    Thanks again.

Bump... A simple "I can't help you." will suffice-- just want to know you've read it.

I will say at this point I dont have a clue to what problem you have but, those sorts of errors are associated to domain controller issues on networks, so question are you on a corporate network?

Do you use Window Blinds skinning software?

If you goto Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer, do you have any errors numbered Event ID 5723 or 3227?

What software did you install 3 days ago or did you change or adjust/tweak any settings.

What was the name of the virus Avast caught.. this maybe very significant to find a fix.

In addition to Halo's comments, check your system drivers and configuration especially the network card settings - go to Control Panel/System and select the Hardware tab and press the Device Manager... button. Are there any anomalies or errors listed?

Ok, I checked the Event ID's and none were 5723 or 3227 and I went into the device manager and everything was fine. Also, yes, I use Windows Blinds-- Could that be a problem or are you just asking because you saw in the Hijack This log file? I can't recall doing anything at all out of the ordinary a week prior to the mess-up. (Read forums, play online games, download some 100% safe things) I can't recall the name of the virus Avast! found (And I've recently uninstalled it.) but I do remember it was classified as a 'decompression bomb' if that is of any use.

I've tried some more different anti-virus programs and spyware things-- nothing... I even recently tried reinstalling Windows XP Pro overtop of the old version and still the same problem. Any more suggestions or should I just format c: and reinstall windows? (I really don't want to but it's looking grim.)

    Thanks,
    Jordan

Ok, I tried replacing "rsaenh.dll" with a new version (that I got from dlldump.com), and that didn't seem to do anything at all and I'm still getting the same problems. Also, that website is for Windows 2000 and I have Windows XP Pro-- don't know if that makes a difference. The rest of that help guide don't seem to apply to XP from what I can figure out. The description and symptoms described are right on though.

Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but I've been recently getting a bunch of error popups, almost every time I'm on my comp in safe mode, about a spooler or something (I think it's for my printer). (The kind where you choose send error report or don't send.) I recently uninstalled my printer and it's not connected to the computer, so maybe that is what is causing it.

After looking around a bit more I found: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824302/en-us#appliesto (Don't know how I didn't find this before... I think I was searching for 'unavailable' instead of 'not available'... stupid...)

In that link it says "A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support (http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question."

From that I gather they want me to call them, but it sort of looks like they want to charge me if I do. Further down the page it says "The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel." Then it goes on to list different files that I'm guessing would be replaced in the hotfix. My question, is how do I figure out if I have the 32 bit or 64 bit edition of Windows XP? I'm guessing I have the 32 bit. Assuming I have the 32 bit version it lists:

Date Time Version Size File name
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    19-Aug-2003 01:35 5.1.2600.117 100,352 Msv1_0.dll (pre SP1)
    26-Aug-2003 02:28 5.1.2600.1261 110,592 Msv1_0.dll (post SP1)

If I go to dlldump.com-- their version of msv1_0.dll is 126K in size and has a version 5.1.2600.2180. Would this be alright to use as a replacement? (Assuming this is the only file I have to replace.) (Am I even doing it right?)

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for all your help so far.

To answer your question you have XP 32bit, to double check if you wish right click My Computer > Properties and it will say Windows XP x64 Edition if you have the 64bit version of XP.

Plus your 32bit version will be Post SP1 as you have SP2 and that file version 5.1.2600.2180 is the same one I have, as to doing it right.. from the information you have supplied and reading the MS KB articles the fix sounds plausable.... but I would be at this time, backing up all your important files and documents, favorites folder, any emails incase you have to re-install... which as you have been trying to fix this after a virus infection maybe the best course of action in the long run?

The file should be placed in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder

If you register the DLL does it make a difference, alot of the time if you copy an new DLL to the system you will need the register it.

goto Start > Run and type regsvr32 msv1_0.dll ok

but I fear that the next course of action would be and I would be going this route after exhausting all possible fixes is to re-install, but remember to backup all important info and files first.

If you are running Windows XP, try booting from the original Cd, selecting repair windows xp through repair console, and running chkdsk /p after it lets you logon to your windows xp under dos. Sometimes Windows xp becomes so corrupted that a regular bootup chkdsk /f will not do it and it requires a chkdsk /p through the orginal windows xp disk. I am not sure why you did it, but I would not turn off the restore function, because that is pretty much the resort of last chance. I have repaired a hanging windows xp several times this way, also it is a good practice to do this through the windows xp cd once a month.

And if the above doesn't work, re install.
