**I know Rememberance Day is celebrated in other countries-this could fit for other locations as well**

This was moving back in August when Neil Boortz posted it online- Neil posted that snopes had not disproved the story.

Any one who tells you they do not fear going into a conflict is suicidal, fear is what keeps them aware.

Noted, I am a "Vet" with 11 cold war tours, I remain aware of my past and what "The boy" is going through.

My memories of fear began in 1969 being on the shankhill in uniform making my comrades and myself the perfect target.

It seems only about 100 years ago but - A very famous general stated to me "There are only two things in life that make a person feel truly alive, PAIN and FEAR". I didn't reflect that onto my subordinates, I just soked it up and treated my people with respect.

Still not a safe place today also Bill, I do work over in that area at times at Queens.

Silence was observed today in the medical clinic I was in and observed by all.

I'm a "Brit" don't forget us and the hundreds of Gurhkas that I have served with (And - taken on their "1st Holiday" - Can only be taken after 6 months of service). I have a "Second son" as his Father (With whom I served, he died and instructed that his son be mine]. "Dev" is now a member of my family.

I have completed the march to remember "Those who died". It is 100 miles with a "Full pack" (My feet fealt like glass after the 1st 25 miles). I received a bunch of flowers from a Dutch Lady I have never "Glanced upon" before and she said "Thank you".

to my friend Richard (USA) who never came back, to my dad (USAF, Tuy Hua), who did, and to my nephew (USMC) who (thank God) waited until he got home to tell us what happened in Fallujah.

actually, Richard "came back." he's on The Wall. said my goodbye, there.

Of course, I didn't forget the Brits. They were called "Tommies" by the Dutch. (I was born and raised in Holland)

Many vets used to visit Dutch families in Holland because they were invited. The Dutch children look after the cemeteries and put flowers there. They know the history well.

No, the Dutch will NEVER forget and will always be immensely thankful/greatful.

Personally, My father died on 19 September 1944. Hit by a shrapnel of a bomb because the Germans bombed the city 1 day after liberation. I was 2 years and 4 months. My mother turned into a widow in an instant with 6 children aged 4 months to 12 years.

I was told that my eldest sister would take me to the soldiers for chocolate and other goodies. I would come home and speak English but no one could understand me.

Yes Bill, I heard about war babies. Real baby boom then eh? Not only in Britain though! LOL

My mother for years used to scream and run into our house when Dutch army planes would fly over the city on Mondays. It was their training exercise. We kids would run after her into the house. Of course she remembered the bombardment, we the youngest ones didn't.

I don't remember my father at all. The "Tommies" used to call me "blondie" (sp?) because my hair was blond and in little natural curls. Of course, that's according to my eldest sis.

Don't understand why I don't like chocolate though since I can remember. Perhaps I ate too many chocolates then......

I was a "war baby" - During the communist uprising in Malaya. My Dad just took me in and adopted me. He received a rebuke but he could not be busted as his last promotion was a "Field Commission" earned whilst blowing up newly commissioned Chinese gun boats (In the bush "Up country"). Funny thing - I hate chocolate as well. - Go figure!

To all whom have served and are currently serving, my deepest gratitude is not and would never be worthy enough to say just how much you are all appreciated. While this is primarily a holiday in the USA and Britain during this particular time of the year, we raise Old Glory and the Union Jack together and honor those who sacrificed so much, and for some, made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

You may not be able to draw blood from a stone, but today cement will surely turn to sponge as the headstones of our fallen soak the tears of their families.

Thank you veterans for a sacrifice no one hopes for, but freedom can not live without. You are not forgotten.
