Can anyone tell me how to get VGASave gone?
I've looked everywhere for a Standard WinXP VGA Graphics adapter and a way to re-install it but to no avail. I've followed about 2 dozen potential solutions from 'Enable vga mode' to swapping the vga file in Win/Sys32 with a new clean copy, but still my Radeon 9550 (Catalyst driver) demands I install StandardVGA adapter before it will allow setup to run. Tried ATI for help and the mb manufacturer but no luck there either.
I run a KV2 Extreme board (Socket 939 with Via VT8237 chipset) Win XP with AMDAthlon.
I am told that the problem source was most likely a worm called 'MyWife' that blackscreened everything.
    Any reliable help appreciated.

Windows XP doesn't have a VGA mode.

Your problem isn't what you think. The error says it needs a standard vga adapter before it will allow setup to run.

    --That makes no sense.

Instead, I think the problem is your agp driver isn't installed, and therefore the video card cannot be properly detected. This will also put you into a VGA Save mode.

Install your motherboard chipset drivers. Sounds like they will be the Via Hypherion 4-in-1 drivers.

Got it. Many thanks for that.
What got me was the 'install standard vga graphics adapter' error message that opened when I tried to reload the Catylist drivers. It seems not to accurately describe the problem, as you quite rightly point out. IF it had said AGP in the first place... I'd have known where to look.
    Anyways...
The VIA Hypherion driver pack did the trick tho and all up and running again.
    Thanks again for your advice.

No problem. I agree, it couldn't hurt for software devs to put in helpful error messages

Not me, although I have some friends that do.

I considered trying it, but I'm still not sure its my kind of game. I'm more into the fantasy mmo. I'm considering preordering DDO.

    Problem Solved with Intel chipest:

I hooked up an older Sony Trinitron 17sfII CRT monitor to the analog port (the small usually blue connector) and Windows placed VgaSave under Display adapters in the Device Manager tree. Before this happened I installed both windows versions(win9x/ME and XP) of the drivers. Win9x drivers were the last I tried. I am not sure if the Win9x drivers allowed this happen. Anyway, I went to Device Manager\Display adapters\(whatever)\Adapter[tab]\Update Driver...[button] and had windows look for the driver. It slowly loaded (took about 5 mins) an exe file and after that it finished. I switched it from the blue(RGB) legacy port to the DVI port and it still works. =D
