    Hi all,

I would bow down and pray to the friendly geek that might help me with this problem as it's been with me for six months now. I have regular system crashes where it reboots unexpectedly. Any help from Microsoft has led to absolutely nothing. I have informed them but it's like talking to a silicon wall.

I've always been aware of this being due to a driver but the diagnostics that MS always send me are useless. Lately, I reinstalled Windows (a lengthy process that took almost 3 days including making back-ups and so on) but to no avail. The problem returned with a vengeance. Doing some independent research I found out that my Sapphire Radeon 9550 driver was out of date. I found this out by going on to Sapphire's website and downloading a trial version of 'Version Tracker Pro' which confirmed that 'Radeon 9550', 'Radeon 9550 Secondary', 'PS/2 Compatible Mouse' and 'SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter' were all out of date. I am loathe to download the full version for a single error as in my experience problems like this are always appearing and can normally be solved without shelling out tons to companies who make programs like these. I'd have to be seriously rich to keep up and, also in my experience, they're not always guaranteed to solve the specific problem I'm having. In this case, I'm not even sure whether it would be able to find the right drivers to stop this error from occurring or if it is just a white elephant.

Moreover, further research helped me to find an appropriate modified driver for the Radeon 9550 but, for some reason, it won't download. I've contacted them about this and am awaiting a response. For the others, I can find no specific details for these drivers and their appropriate updates. FYI, I am using Windows XP ProSP2, 2.8Ghz, 512 MB Ram. Please ask if there is any more information you might need if you think you can help.

Help me, Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

    Regards,

    Ibsen3

Thanks for your help, Adrynalyne. I'm following your instructions but I've reached an impasse. I've loaded a minidump and reached the point where it says 'Executable search path is:' but then nothing follows it and there is a message underneath which says 'Debuggee not connected'.

My second minidump report contains a number of errors including this one which it mentioned twice: *** ERROR: Symbol file could not be found. Defaulted to export symbols for ntoskrnl.exe -
Then this one: *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for sbbotdi.sys
Then finally: ***** Kernel symbols are WRONG. Please fix symbols to do analysis.

I tried this for a third minidump report and the result was the same as the above. Same as the fourth and fifth, so at least something is consistent.

    Any advice, please?

    You've configured it incorrectly.

Just upload them zipped here. I'll take a peek.

Speedbit Video Accelerator is the culprit.

All crashes point to the sbbotdi.sys driver.

Uninstalling it should resolve the issue.

Really? I'd have never thought it was that. If so, Microsoft really are full of s**t because they've been sending me all over the place to get this sorted. But do you think it would really cause my PC to crash and restart even when I'm not using it at all? It tends to quit whenever I play the odd game and maybe have something downloading in the background so I thought the PC was groaning under the pressure and was ultimately undone by a driver.

Anyway, thanks greatly for your help. Long live these forums. May they reign eternal!

Yeah, even if the software is not active, the driver always remains installed and in memory.

Its definitely the cause. You were right it was a driver, just a driver for that particular application ;)
