I dont know anything about video capture cards and was hoping someone could shed some light...

Can you use a video capture card and a normal video card (i.e. my geforce 6600GT) at the same time? Any help would be great.

    Thanks

Why, yes in fact you can....in fact, it'd be better for the video capture card if you did, since it wouldn't have to process your monitor's video. However, there is one thing that you do have to think about. Slots. I don't know what kind of board you are using, but there is only one AGP slot on my mobo, and the rest are all pci. now, if you have a pci card, and an agp card, then you're good to go (the graphics card should be the AGP, not the video capture card) but if you get a board with a few pci Exp. x16 slots, you should be able to get a pair working like lighting. Try finding one of the SLI boards, and doing some research on them. I know you can enable/disable, SLI mode, but I'm not sure if that enables or disables the second pci-e x16 slot.

If you have any further questions, or I've not made something clear, please feel free to contact me. Enjoy! (Ragnar1@hotmail.com)

Yes, you need both, unless you have an ATI All in Wonder. the video card does the display, the tvtuner/capture does only taht. Think of it as an add on. Tuner cards are all PCI and are not meant to replace your video. The exception, is the AIW by ATI which combines the two on one card.

    Ah, very good.

Im running on an Asus P4P800.

One AGP Slot and 4 PCI Slots, but no PCI Express. Any suggestions on Video Capture cards?

Thanks a bunch for the help.

mmm, you know, billd is right, my mistake. I have installed a few cards that were all in wonder knock offs I believe, because they had the ability to work as both, but I did some research after reading his post, and yes, he is right, you need both for the most part. As for suggestions...

The Video Capture card should be something of a higher end model, since any imperfections will show immediately.

-this one doesn't seem too bad, you can obviously go higher or lower end with it, depending on how much you want to spend, but things to look for a output formats, and an abundance of quality ports.

As far as video cards go...well, I prefer Nvidia, others would say ATI, but really it wont matter unless you have 600 bucks to throw into it, so just set yourself a budget, and go out and find the best card you can for that price.

*Be Aware - you don't want to buy one of those 20 dollar GeForce 6800 GT's if it's that cheap....there's a reason. I've been ripped off on those many times before, and i hate to see anyone else go through that.

    Good Luck, and happy hunting!

Picking one is a toughie. We have a Compro TV/FM PVR That cost $61.00 Canadian, a year ago. It is in its second computer right now. It has worked very well, although we had some issues at first (on the first comp it had issues with shared IRQ, and the drivers it came with didn't allow the sound to work). There are a multitude of brands out there, some you may have not heard of. I'm sure some are rebranded versions of another manufacture. Most of them are based on one of only a couple technologies. If you do a bit of research, you will see that most share components.
Basically they are either software or hardware driven. the hardware driven is considerably more expensive, and, should provide better results. The software driven products, are much cheaper and provide very good results. As I mentioned, we have a Compro which would fall in the latter category, and has produced excellent results. Tapes that my wife transferred from VHS to create DVDs were of excellent quality, actually superior to the original. Different cards will offer different features, which will influeence the price. Some are straight TV tuner cards, some also have FM tuners, and some offer both as well as video capture from other sources, such as VHS. I don't haave a link handy, but there is a TV card forum out there that may be of help. If you go there you will find that no brand is trouble free; there will always be someone who has had a negative experience. The main reason I bought the one we have was price and availability, as well as features, because the primary use was to be video capture; ( I never heard of Compro). I hope this hasn't confused the situation more than clarified. For casual use, there is no shortage of product out there, from barnd names you know and some you don't. We have been more than satisfied with the Compro, and I kow there are better out there as well as (probably) worse. Good luck.

I was wondering what you are trying to do?
I do A/V editing and out of all the products out there I would go with Matrox that is if you don't mind spending some money.
I have a Gigabyte dual CPU server board with onboard raid with a Matrox Millinium P750 display card and I run the Matrox RTX-10 video capture card. This particular capture card is alot cheaper than the RTX-100. I did alot of research and found that there wasnt a huge difference between the two, not enough of one to spend an extra $400. The software you get with the Matrox RTX package is well worth the $600+ I paid just for my capture card. I got Adobe Encore, Adobe Premiere pro and Adobe Audition. If you look around on line you can find the Matrox RTX-10 for $599 or so. The display card is awesome.....especially for what I do, I paid alittle over $250 I believe.
Run a search on google and look around, pricegrabber might be another good place to go. One thing with Matrox, you will need to go to Matrox.com and make sure your motherboard and chipset is compatible. They have a complete list on there site. This took up ALOT of my time, of corse when you are shelling out this kind of money you want to make sure it's gonna work. I will say this, If you plan on capturing video to edit there is NOTHING better in my opionion. We are talking editing in realtime with this card. Make sure you have the Ram as well for the editing. Matrox comes with alot of cool 3D transitions!
If you go to the cooling an modding section of the forums/ click on it / scroll down to how to tidy up cables??+ how to duct?? / click on it / and you will see some large photos o my machine. The large card towards te bottom is the RTX-10
    I hope this helped. :D

I was just thinking, if price is an issue there are two other brands that I personally would go with. Canopus and Pinnacle. They have lower end video capture cards and then of corse they have there top of the line. Canopus would be my second choice. Once again, It all depends on what you are going to do. :)

I have the Leadtek TV2000 Expert on my pc and do some video transfers. I used to have a Leadtek Ti4400 MyVivo which was a great card in that the Vivo function could handle the video side but when I upgraded my VGA card as per dets below got the TV2000 Expert.

As I said above I use it moderately but for the price I have found it to be very good and it also has good software to go with it.

    Good Luck

If your system is compatible and you want something VERY reliable I would suggest spenging the extra money on Matrox. I really didnt want to spend as much as I did but now that I have it I am really glad that I did! You definitely will be pleased! I would suggest checking their site out. :D
