I am looking into getting a video capture card, but from what I have heard they can/are a nightmare. Can someone help me with what I should get so I can avoid the issues typically associated with them? I am really wanting simply to transfer old VHS home videos to DVD, not anything major. Here are my system specs:

    Dell Dimension 4800
    Pentium 4 - 2.4 GHz
    512 Meg Ram
    Windows XP Professional with SP2

Typically speaking most capture cards are OK. The ones that tend to give the most probelsm are ATI and Nvidia's cards which include Video in. Quite often the support for doing video capture with these cards is crap, and getting normal video capture software to work properly is difficult.

It's usually best to just go out and buy a video capture card. It's only use is video capture and the support is usually better and comes with all the needed software to do basic captures. I don't really have a brand to suggest as I've not used a lot of them. I just find the ones that arn't designed specifically for video capture are extremly difficult to work with sometimes.

nazpastor, my current video capture card is as per my sig. Leadtek TV Xpert2000. Nice card. I dual boot so have it installed on 98SE & XP. The install on 98SE created a small problem in that 3Dmark2003 freezes at the butterfly stage. No big deal.

I use it in the same way as you ie transfering old vhs to the pc. The card's software utility is simple and it has given me no problems at all.

Previously to this I used a Leadtek GF Ti4400 Vivo. The Vivo component was more or less identical to the TV Xpert in terms of the manner in which the software. Infact everything was the same.

Equally with this card I had no problems at all. When I upgraded to GF 6800 (also Leadtek), I put the Ti4400 in my childern's pc and they dual boot 98se/xp, no problems.

Since the GF2 I have bought Leadtek for several reasons, firstly, they have never me any issues when building pcs, (touchwood) so far none have given up on me and lastly their support guys are always keen to please and very helpful.

    All the best
