video capture / dvd

Ive got an ATI all-in-wonder 7500 capture card (replacing it is not an option)
I have successfully captured movies from tv, edited them, and burned svcd's.
A dvd burner was acquired recently; I would like to burn the movies to dvd rather than svcd.

I've done some google searches about recording dvd, but have not been able to come up with search criteria that gives results I'm looking for.

What format do I need to use to capture the movie -- mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 or what?
Is a codec the same as a decoder?
assume that The movie has already been successfully captured, what software do I need to burn a DVD? (linux or windows software, linux prefered - its more cost effective)

 

MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 are the most popular codecs used.

It really depends on what you want as far as which one to use.

MPEG-2 is a high-resolution revision of the original standard, and probably the most widely used DVD standard as it's well established and gives a great picture in a manageable size.

MPEG-4 gives you the same great picture if not better, in a much smaller size. Popular examples are XVid, DivX and 3IVX.

Codec stands for coder/decoder, which allows you to make and/or play movies or audio compressed in a certain format.

I'm not into Linux, but if cost is an issue, CDBurnerXP PO and DVD Decrypter are both very good and freeware.

You can do much better with Ulead Video Studio 7. So you can capture directly in DVD format. If you capture first in SVCD and convert to DVD after, it takes a lot of time and also poor quality will result in the end.
