video card 800/600 resolution

How do I tell if its my video card that is giving me resolution troubles.. (read that the video card can be a factor in display issues) .
My problem is, just got a new modem (dell) , and plugged it into the old monitor (dell), but I am not able to make the resolution 800/600.
When I apply 800/600, it moves everything, Including the clock down bottom, into the middle of my screen and I am not able to expand the page or anything.
I have even tried expanding the controls on the outside of the monitor itself to Vertically expand the screen , but it doesn't come close to expanding it even at like 120%.
Do you think it is the graphics card that only allows a certain size? or Does Anyone here have a clue as to why it wont go 800/600. ***and yes it worked on old modem with this same screen, so not the monitor.
Im sure you'll want to know what graphic card is on here an all that, but im not even sure myself, Ill do my best to look now.....

says i have 2 display adaptors=intel
monitor is dell m770
comp says acpi multi proccesor pc
I dont see where to look for name of graphics card..

 

Hi, can you re-read this part of your post and explain what is going on? Your modem is for connecting to the internet and cannot be connected to a monitor. Are you sure you are talking about a modem?

 

Yes, as sach says you shouldn't be connecting your monitor to your modem! In fact it should be impossible.

Attached is a picture of a Dell modem, i dont think this is what your computer is connected to.

Do you mean you got a new graphics card?

Can you take a picture of your graphics card and post it on here, or provide a link to a card that looks like yours.

Sorry guys for your time, I just went to take a screenshot to show you, and it is almost totally to the edge of screen now on 800/600. Think I have a haunted computer. Or maybe all the updates it did fixed something.. not sure.

And as to reply above..i get an F in trying to explain things haha, I thought the computer box was called a modem. (an yep my text is blue an dont know why.. get an F in replying too!
