Video Card Not Working

I just bought a new video card, an Ati Radeon x1600 Pro AGP. Before I put it in, I deleted my old nvidia drivers like the manual said to. I opened my computer up and put it in there, and after I started it up, all I could see was vertical bars of distorted color. I put my old video card back in and ran the driver cd that came with the video card. I installed the catalyst and put the old card back in. I started it up and I still see the vertical bars, but they're different colors. I don't know what else I can do. By the way, a few days ago, my Ati Radeon 9600 Pro AGP card seemed to die right after I exited a game, but after formatting it, the 9600 would mess up after I put on the drivers. So I put in a GeForce4 MX 440 AGP and it worked fine. Is this a motherboard problem?

    Thanks

Does anyone have an idea of what I should do?

By the way, I can still swap the nvidia geforce4 mx 440 back in and it works just fine. When I have the Ati Radeon X1600 Pro in, it will boot up and everything, and I sign in on messenger even, but you can't see the picture at all, just the vertical distorted colored bars.
