Hello Everyone. I have a Dell Latitude D610. I think I am having a video card problem. It seems to be struggling with downloading webpages. However it seems to be intermittent. Does anybody have any experience with this? I believe the card is an ATI Mobility Radeon X300. Is there a way to replace this card or is it integrated? I am running Windows XP Pro. You also can see the screen struggle to update when switching between programs.

    Thanks,

    Keyser

First I would try uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers via "Device Manager"

This is the most probable cause IMO.

Ok. I am going to try that. Does that sound consistent with my symptoms? It seems to take forever for a page to load.

When I try to uninstall. It restarts and is still there. It also seems like whenever a browser is open it goes really slow and almost freezes sometimes. It should be under display adapter correct?

I clicked on uninstall. After the system restarted, it appeared to still be there so I clicked update driver. It still seems as though the rendering is getting hung up in firefox. Does it sound like this is the actual problem?

Firefox actually freezes and gets locked up.

Yes, when you uninstall your "Plug and Play" manager will reinstall if for you on restart, you then have to install the drivers via disc (which should have come with laptop) or download here...

Install the drivers and restart, if problem persists it may be something a little more serious.
Your symptoms do match driver issues but with PC's you never know until you know.
Plus drivers are the easiest fix so go for that first :)

Ok. I did that and it has improved the problem 90%.

However, this is still the description that my wife provides:

"it still lags sometimes. and it's weird when i have a window open and i switch between tabs, the page isn't there as soon as i switch
like if i click on open in new tab
then when i go to that tab, it takes 2-3 seconds for the page to appear
when i first switch over, it
its all white, then the page appears."

Does this sound like it is still a video card problem? If so could it be that the driver is not quite correct?

    Thanks,

    Keyser

Well if your scrolling etc has improved and now you are temporarily locking up, I would say you have some other issues.

    Again work with simplest first.

One issue could be firefox, it's not unheard of that it suddenly goes to a crawl for no aparent reason, try a different Explorer (IE or Google Chrome etc) temporarily to see if there is a difference.
If there's a noticable difference then you need to reinstall firefox (don't forget to back up your favs)

It also sounds like you could be bogged down.

Don't adjust any settings, just leave it the way it is, run the cleaner and the Registry cleaner. Just follow the prompts.

See how it is after that.

Also bring up Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) and post how many processes you have running, this info is displayed at the bottom of Task Manager.

    38 processes

    top mem usage

    mcupdmgr.exe 110,720K
    mcshield.exe 66,384K
    iexplore.exe 43,864K
    iexplore.exe 36,120K
    explorer.exe 30,624K

CPU usage 100% in task manager.

    Thanks so much!

The other thing that keeps happening is that when I go to a site like majorgeeks, I have to kill a page because it stops responding.

I tried hardwire connecting the system and it seemed to work great. Therefore I uninstalled the wlan card adapter driver and reinstalled it. The system seemed to work great. Then it seems to sometimes go back to its old ways. So sometimes it works fine and sometimes it doesn't. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Keyser

One of the things that I seem to get a lot is that the shockwave player stops responding. Could this have something to do with it? How would I fix this?
