Hi, I have a PNY NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 PCI 128 mb video card installed right now. I'd like to free up a PCI slot, so I'm looking at getting a PCI Express card. I'm on a bugdet, so I'm looking for cheap. I found this at Tiger Direct:

I'm wondering if I'd actually be upgrading with this swap out, breaking even, or downgrading??????

Hi, PCI and PCI express is different, make sure you have a PCI-e slot.

splitt3r You are now the victim of a drive by title change

that would be a pretty big upgrade.

if you have an Intel D101GGC, then why were you ever running a PCI nvidia FX5200? The integrated ATi X300 is already better than an FX5200...

if I were you, seeing that your graphics needs are not too demanding, i would uninstall the nvidia drivers, remove the FX5200, and enable the On-Board graphics in the BIOS and try that out first. It should be an upgrade and you wouldnt have to buy a new card.

OK, I'm starting to get this now...

First, we look at the chipset type, most popular are ATI X, ATI Radeon, and NVIDIA GeForce. Each chipset has a version, the higher number being better.

Then, we have memory, the more the better.

Then we have interface. PCI, ATX, PCIe, and onboard.

Am I on targe here? If so, then thats all good, I feel smarter now.

So, here is my question. I'm upgrading so I can play this game called oblivion comming out soon. It recommends Geforce 6800 or ATX 800 or better. Armed with my new knowledge, I found an ATX 1300, 256 mb for 99.99 and a GeForce 6800, 128 mb for $86. Here they are:

What's better? How do you compare ATX to GeForce?

Oh, and thanks for the advice on the onboard video, I'm going to s**t can the PCI Card tonight. I only used it because I had it from my last computer, and I assumed it was better. Now I know better...

    Thanks

dont buy cards ending in se or le and for nvidia, xt, se, and le. They are watered down versions of the good versions and perform far worse. You can get a 6600gt on newegg.com for around 100-120. Or you can dish out a little extra cash for a 6800 or 6800gs. Personally, i dont like AATI cards but a x800 or x850 would be good also.

I would say go with the 6800. It is probably slightly better than the 6600GT.
