I have an e-machine that insists on turning off the video card after about 15 minutes of no use.
I have checked the BIOS for a setting, nothing there.
I tried to alter the power settings in control panel and there is no way to make any changes.
I turned on the screen saver and it runs about 15 minutes then the video card turns off.
I am not certain but I think the hard drive is also going off.

    Greetings, redwing101060.

We need some more info from you: what's the model # of your machine, and what operating system version and Service Pack # are you using?

Also, please download and run Speccy, a free system information tool.

When the scan completes, click 'File', 'Save as Text file', name the report, and save to an easily found location, such as your Desktop.

Be advised: the report will display your IP Address and Windows Product Key. You may delete this information if you so wish.

Then attach that file to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

On the screensaver tab, click the Power button. What is selected in the Power Schenes box?
Have you tried changing that using the down arrow? My eMachine desktop offers me 6 choices.

I have no options in that box.
I believe that is where part of the problem is.
    Thanks

    Fixing the power scheme

No point in looking at hardware. It is NOT a hardware problem. The power schemes are part of windows so it is a software problem.

I am having an issue getting DOS to accept the way I am inputting the commands.
Does anyone see the error I am making?
Please help me get the proper input format.
I have attached what I have been trying to put into the command window.
    Thanks for all your help.

I, too, am having trouble with the DOS commands - I tried to export a power scheme from an XP machine so that I could upload it here, but I keep running into the same syntax errors. It's been a long time since I've used DOS, but I'll keep trying.

Meanwhile, you might take a look at this:

I dug a bit deeper and found the MS article
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913622

The eHow article is WRONG! It appears that a space is needed between powercfg and the / sign. Sorry that I linked to an article that had the wrong context.

Caliban and everyone else that helped with this issue.
Thanks so much for the help.
I was able to restore the default setting in the register.
Not sure what I did but the video and hard drive will now restart when the mouse is moved or the a key is struck on the keyboard.
I did not figure out how to input all the right commands in the register to restore the missing power setting in the control panel, but I managed to changed the default from nothing to a 0.
    Thanks again.
