Hi all. I need a little information before I purchase a video card. I have an HP Pavilion xe744, Intel 82810 graphics adapter (built into Intel 82810AA motherboard...Sux, I know), 512 ram. I am looking at a GeForce fx5200 card. Since my graphics are built into the motherboard, will this card work? I keep hearing about PCI slots, AGP, etc. I know I'll have to disable the graphics on this board, and I have the instructions to do it. I was just curious if the GrForce card will work for me. I want to upgrade because of lag in EQ. Any suggestions?

    if this is your PC:

im afraid you're gonna have to get a PCI graphics card or get a new PC

i would suggest this (since im partial to ATI):

but if you really want a geforce:

also in that spec sheet it says you have three PCI slots ... you *MUST* leave the midde slot empty or there will not be enough room for your new graphics card to disperse heat properly

Hi! Thank you for your kind help. I checked the Radeon card out that you suggested, and it looks like a winner to me. You were right on about my system. She ain't much, but she works very well. I will take your suggestion, and purchase the Radeon card. Thank you so much for helping solve that mystery. I hope I can get the old drivers removed properly. I printed up the HP instructions to disable the Intel Graphics controller, but you know how that goes...Seems simple if not very clear. Again, thanks!! :)

another thing though ,,, the reason you may be getting lag is because of your dial up connection(im assuming that is what you are using) ... Im sorry i didnt bring this up before ... but a new video card will improve your graphics quality it will not remove lag from online games ... ive played online games(diablo 2) with 28k dial up, and i haven't experienced many problems(from lag) but im thinking its because diablo doesn't require the amount of bandwidth .. everquest most likely requires more(as ive never played everquest) ... so i think if you *JUST* want to remove lag from the game it would be more prudent to get cable

Hi! Thanks for your recent reply. My problem is my card. My ping is great, and I don't experience lag until I get into crowded areas. The Intel card isn't DirectX 9 supported, so my FPS suffers. The stutter gets bad when I'm in graphics-intensive areas of the game. I have the same problem off-line watching videos..The framerate on the Intel on-board really bites...lol.. :)

aLLiKZar It's not too late to back out!

Installing a graphics card will be easy for you to do. I googled it and came up with this Hopefully it will be a resource for you if you run into anything. Most likely when you upgrade your video card, you wont see graphic problems. Have you thought about upgrading your ram as well?

ladymacbeth has 512MB RAM and that is all her system can handle, she would have to replace her entire system to do that

Hi Pyrate and aLLiKZar! Pyrate is correct. 512 is the max on this system as far as ram goes. I will be purchasing a new computer built for gaming next year. I want to wait to see what the new systems will be before I make that large a purchase. This lil' ole HP may not be much, but it runs like a champ, and never gives me grief. I just want to be able to keep up in Everquest on it. A new card is the cheapest route to go, as that will solve my current video problems. Everquest updated to DirectX 9, and my card doesn't support it. The best route to go is to replace the card so my stutter will go away. Got my eye out for a new computer built specifically for gaming. I'll keep this one for surfing the net, etc. This is a great forum! The help I've recieved from ya'll has been right on. I'm learning more as I go. I surely appreciate the help, as I would surely have bought the wrong card, as I didn't know the difference between AGP and PCI. Thanx guys! :D

So if the card is a chip, i can still install a video card in the motherboard?
