I'm looking to up-grade the video card in my desk top, trying not to spend to much on it, but i am willing to look at anything right now.

I would like to improve my tower's ability to play game, thats right this geek is a gammer too.

I'm new at this whole build your own pc thing, but i like the cusmisiblilyt (sp) of doing it my self.

If any of yall can give me some tips on what to get or even know of some good review sites it would be very appriceted.

    Thell.

p.s. I'm appoligize for my inability to spell.

well at the moment i would like to be able to play Oblivian, and games of simular visual complexity, maybe a little better. I'm thinking of trying to keep it under $300, but i have about $500 to spend total, whatever is left will prolly go to upgraing my sound card.

My tower is a custome build job, no main stream manufactures put their hands on it, well other then parts.... as far as i can tell just about any thing can go into it, it does have a MSI motherboard and a AMD processor, not sure about the specifics.

i would look at the Nvdia 6600 gt

Its mid range can play oblivion very nice and quite cheap now.

Anything above that is a bonus. remember GT and GTX means good top of that range. dont get LE or anything like that.

    I hope this helps.

Any more questions ill go into deph if you want

you can get a Creative X-Fi Extreme Music for about $120, which leaves $375 for a video card. Do you know if its AGP or PCI-Express? If its PCI-E, check out a 7900GS, a great budget card. Save the rest for a mid-range directx 10 card when they come out (current dx 10 cards cost $400+)

I am sorry viper boy, but like i said dont get GS!! Take a look at these two cards for example and you will see why.

    This is a 7600 GT

    This is a 7900 GS

As you see the 7900gs is about £30 or about $50 more expensive. Yet when you compare the clock speeds and timings. The 7600 older but GT varient faster and not much differant.

but in agreance with viper boy. If you do want to wait a while it would benefit you a lot more if you get a Direct X 10 card.

    I hope this helps

Definately use the internet as a tool here. When I was shopping for a video card, it was a big help. Sometimes you can find card comparisons, specific to the game you are wanting to play with it. I was looking for DOOM 3 specific and found links comparing a number of cards and manufacturer's. You might try a search like best video cards for playing oblivion. Also, stated on the box are the recommended video cards and system requirements. Good luck.

here's what i just said in a diff post:

(i chose XFX cards because they run much faster than other versions)
    XFX 7600GT:
    $115.99 after rebate
    590mhz core 1600mhz memory
    128-bit interface
    12 pixel pipelines

    XFX 7900GS:
    189.99 after rebate
    600mhz core 1600mhz memory
    256-bit interface
    20 pixel pipelines

the 7900GS beats the pants off the 7600GT in all tests, check it out for yourself. Yes, both cards are strong performers but the 7900GS IMO is a better card for the money. Yes, it costs a bit more but its definitely worth it
