well the 9550 is better, but does your comp support AGP? and are you getting it so you can play games? if its for games i would suggest something much higher, but what are you getting it for and give us some info

yeah, but its a 9200. warcraft 3 is about the extent that that card will do well. it simply not meant for gaming, especially if you want it to last for any new games. (owners of CS: Condition Zero are 2nd in line to be beta testers for CS: Source *which is CounterStrike 2* starting later this month and early september)

if you want to be able to play halflife 2 and CS: Source, you're going to want a better card.

What would be the budget-friendly ccard if I wanted to play CS: Source

WarCraft III runs perfectly well on a GeForce2 MX (a circa 2000 card). Any card you buy right now will be fine for that. CS is based on Half-life (circa 1998). Any card on the market will run that fine, as even the above GeForce2 MX would give you 60 fps at 10x7. Starcraft is sprite-based (that is, 2D) and very non-graphics intensive. And it's a bit old. It's also going to be easily run by any card on the market. You could get a GeForce MX 4000 and be happy on these games.

Halo, OTOH, will require a pretty beefy card. The 9200 will not cut it.

Honestly, I'd say it depends on what the rest of your system is. If you got 256MB of SDR RAM and a 1GHz or less processor, go for the 9200 (especially since you can't run Halo). Anything more and your system won't be able to keep up with the graphics card. If you've got DDR RAM and a 1.5+ GHZ processor, the 9550 might be a bit better for you.

i'm not going to attest to the brand, but this is a great deal on a GeForce FX5900XT http://www.pcimicro.com/.sc/ms/dd/1...73/APOLLO BLOODY MONSTER 3 GEFORCE FX 5900XT

usually that card is closer to $180 or $200.

i would say if you plan to run CS: Source, you should at least have a 9600XT (around $130) or a GeForce FX5700 or higher, like the FX5900.

also, check any reviews, the 9550 is significantly slower than a 9600... so if you are going ATi, get at LEAST a 9600

I'm not familiar with geforce so your way ahead of me since i'm an ati guy, but I do know one thing, if you go ati at least peek at the benches on comparing the 9600 series with the other competitiors.

Also thats a VERY GOOD PRICE for the 5900xt except well I dont' know Apollo on quality compared to (for ati saphire or ati) Read up on the reviews and see what other people think about the company. ;).

thats what i mean, usually i'd stick with a well known brand, like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, or Leadtek... but for the price, I would risk it. especially since that store has a very high reseller rating.

and for you munky, the 5900XT is comparable to a 9800pro 128MB, more or less. XT in nVidia terms is step down from the Ultra version, which is opposite from ATi, as XT is their top usually.

Ah I c. Damn I sooo didn't know that thanx Years, I really appreciate a lil about the difference in ati and nvidia but yea like you said beware of the prices since, it is your hard earned money your giving these companys. Might as well get as much bang for your buck as possible. Ex: AMD vs. Pentium ;).

I know I have a P4 but hey I'm building my own compy soon just need to be patient and save. Its all good and by the way ( I know I need to make a thread but umm) should I get a AmD mobile 2500+ or and amdxp 3200+ Which one is a better offer since well I heard that the amdxp's are all locked and stuff and I don't want to have to do what tom's hardware guide did to unlock that amd processor ( putting scotch tap and glue and such on the L1 bridge) I believe. Yea I just want to have a unlocked processor out of the box ya know like amd athalon's 64 bit processors.

well do you want an Athlon 64 or an Athlon XP? if you can afford, by all means go 64 (preferably the socket 939 version with dual channel DDR support)

other than that, a mobile chip is designed to have less power consumption--something really not important in a desktop. i'd go for an xp3000+ over a standard xp2500+ because it has a native 400mhz FSB over the 2500+'s 333. the 3000+ wont overclock as much in comparison... but thats mainly because its the same core in the first place. if you want an overclocking adventure and arent going 64-bit, the 2500+ or 2600+ barton are fun, since they will reach speeds of the 3200+ and 3400+ if pushed right.

but yeah, when you're ready, make a new thread.
