Video card

intel p4, 2.4, 512, NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400, XPHome 5.60 SP2

Problem-
Mouse/Video stuttering & very slow running Battle field or similar games.
All has been fine for a couple of years.
Age of Empire type games seem fine
PC generally running good, benchmarks as expected.

Realizing the auto-update was downloading SP2 on my 56k dial up modem, and canceling it, i rebooted to find 16 colors, all process disabled and no sp1. Performed a system restore only to find that i had turned it off some months ago in my last spyware removal frenzy.

There were two pc's listed in device manager both with most devices on irq11
i have removed them and replaced them both with advance confi. & power
ACPI PC, which seems to have redistributed the devices around , leaving my nvid card on irq11. (on startup it still shows a usb host controller on irq11 ?)
I now have the latest drivers for the nvid card, but no change.

Please help- i'm out of my depth on this one!-not sure where to start

Have had some malware issues but all clean and tight now.(CHAS IS GOOD)

Try
run>sfc /scannow
Windows file protection check.

 

In device manager>display adapter>nvidia>right click properties

What are displayed in general and resources tab?

Looks good no device conflicts,
Also try a run>dxdiag ensure no problem is displayed in the directx tab.
Also do a clean install of nvidia diplay drivers.

This will clean your old files and the new driver should work.
Also you can try installing sp2 from cd.

 

Dxdiag shows no problems (dx9.0c)
SP2 recently installed (after probs began)
i'll try the clean install of the drivers and post results.


ps. xp came pre-installed with no cd (that won't happen again)
i did use a xp pro cd to SFC. two files came up with version errors
but it did get me up and going!
my xp home is build 5.600 do i need the same build No. of home to SFC

SFC may ask for service pack,hotfix and other update files also,which are newer than the versions available on cd.If you have xp home installed xphome cd would be fine.The newer the build the better I guess.

i'm still at work,
i've been getting the info over the phone.
i'll find out in about an hour or so.
anyway, must get back to 3d car driver.

 

i have found updated sound&oem monitor drivers i'll change those at the same time.
Any thoughts on upgrading the chipset BIOS or is that playing with fire?

 

You can check your motherboard manufacturer if they have a newer version BIOS.
While troubleshooting my advice is take it one at a time.

nvid. & msi/realtec sound drivers pre-cleaned & latest re-installed
(seperately)
mouse is flying around the screen (on demand) & your avatar is going beserk
a definite improvement.
Hardware profile 5 is best yet.
BF '42 still very sluggish .....start videos jerk a bit ..mouse moves ultra slow
at main menu.
i've found the correct bios for my chipset, there are some improvements listed
but i'll hold off on that.
still need to complete a proper SFC though.
Time to click on more things i shouldn't ;-)

 

Are you still at 16 bit color?

 

currently at 800*600 16bit

have tried 1024*768 @ 32bit and pc runs well

i noticed in device manager that i have two cd devices listed
cd rw 40 x 12 (which is as usual)
cdvx cd/dvd rom (pretty sure this is new-i have disabled this in profile 5, no deiiference)

i also list "sis 70001 pci to usb host controller" twice. is this usual ?
wireless mouse is via usb ?
