I personally would get the NViDia.
    Why?Because it's cheaper.

Personally I would go for the ATI.
    Why? It's my preference.
    Yeah Intel cards are crap.

I just got a fx5200 and it's conflicting with my tv card so it's really p***ing me off.

But I was told that the nVidia eqivelent of the 9800 is the FX5700.. So would the FX5200 would perform considerably worse, or would I not be able to tell? :p

    worse. far worse.

the FX5700 is on par with the 9600XT or 9800pro... hard to say which exactly, but its the same price as a regular 9600.

minimum you should go is the 9600 or 5700 as they are around the same price.

check out this FX5700 by Gigabyte http://www.gameve.com/gve/Store/ProductDetails.aspx?sku=VC-GIGA-04

gameVE is a reputable seller, i've purchased from them many times, they once upgraded me for free as well when they ran out of stock of an item.

on another note, Doom 3 and Halflife 2 are performing better on nVidia cards as they are OpenGL based games.
