I am new when it comes to video cards. I am thinking about getting a new video card that is good with games. I am looking for one that is compatible with a Dell Dimension 2400. If anyone has suggestions on what type of video card to get, I would appreciate it!!

We have a Dell Dimension 4400 and have just put in a ATI Radeon 9250 graphics accelerator. It works well. ATi is good as well as NVIDIA video cards. They are usually called G-Force. Maybe a G- force 4, 5 or larger will be good. Some of the newer games like Splinter Cell chaos theory require a fast card, therefore i would want to get one that can drive the bigger, newer games. :)

hmmm.....a Graphics card is a nice start, but look into some other things too. a Dell (Dimension I assume?) 2400 is a fine computer the average user. Someone who surfs the internet, plays the occasional game on Yahoo, or types word documents. But unfortunately, a Dim. 2400 is not designed for gaming....not by a long shot. :(

I don't really know what kind of games your trying to play, but if you throw a copy of say, Armies of Exigo, or something new like that, you're gonna run into trouble fairly soon. Dell just doesn't design many of their systems (with maybe the exception of the XPS gen4's) for real gaming.

I'm not trying to dash your hopes, please don't think I am. I just don't want you going out buying an Nvidia Gefore 6800 GT for $600+, only to find that your system wont be able to fully use it's massive potential. Check in with dell, or your local computer store, to see if they can help you with an upgrade or anything of that nature. You will have trouble finding parts since I believe Dell (until recently) used specialized parts to make simply buying some RAM off the shelf wasn't an option.

To get more information about your system, and to find out what you can do to give you more performance within your budget, and within reason, go to dell's support site, and enter your service tag number. They'll have your system's specs on file, and will be able to advise you on upgrade options and your systems' possibilities.

I hope I've been at least some minimal help (even if it makes me the bearer of bad news...) and good luck with dell! ;)

What is the specs of your computer?
How much do you want to spend?

I have a dell dimension 2400 and I'm having it upgraded as we speak!

Firstly dell dimension 2400's don't have an AGP slot or a PCI-Express slot!
So you will either have to get a really old PCI card which wouldn't run todays games very well, or you would have to change your mobo!

But thats not the end of it! Dell uses its own PSU which IMHO isn't very good and doesn't supply enough power for gaming! so that needs to be upgraded aswell.

Now the annoying part, my computer has a space saving case and so will only fit a micro atx motherboard in, which limits your choice to an AGP graphics card (assuming your cpu is socket 478?)
    hope this helps.

I am not thinking of buying a video card worth $500...just a card that is compatible with my system, more upgraded. The game I am currently playing (Call of Duty) works fine with my computer. The performance is not as great as I would want it to be, but it runs fine. I would just like to boost up my frames per second and have better graphics.

I'v just checked the dell site for the 2400 and there is no option for an agp socket or video card,so it looks like you only have pci sockets, not to be confused with pci-e,this question has been asked a few times and the best pci card is an fx 5700 limited edition.
